Athlon X2 7750 or Phenom 9950 on Optiplex 740, will it work???

Hi,

I have an older Optiplex 740 System with Athlon X2 4600, bought in Dec 2006.

Can anybody tell me if my 740 supports the new X2 7750 or Phemom CPUs??? DELL Support says neither yes nor no... they couldn't tell me if there was a change of motherboards when the new Phenoms were released.

I was wondering because the Optiplex 740 is now offered on the Dell Website with the new Phenom CPUs, up to the 9600B. The new X2 7750 CPUs would also be very attractive.

Latest BIOS (2.1.8) is installed.

Hast anybody tested these combinations???

Thanks from Germany

These days I get an AMD Phenom X4 9550 and will test this CPU on my 740. This Phenom is also offered on DELLs website as an option for the Optiplex 740. I hope it works...

The 7750 is not validated on this PC.

I figured out that there are two kind of 740 motherboards, one with 4MB NVRAM Bios, and one with 8Mb NVARM for Systems with Phenom CPUs. Unfortunately, my board only has the 4Mb BIOS. Thats why I did not test the Phenom, it will probably not work.

Who knows what maximum CPU I can use???? X2 6000, X2 6400 or maybe the X2 7750, 7850????

can I have a list of athlon dual-core processors (with model numbers) that will run on my 740.

I do not know if it's enhanced or not, I've never booted it up. I get an error.

thanks.

I also has a Phenom x4 9950 Black Edition in which doesn't work in my Optiplex 740 originally come with Athlon X2 3800+.

After I insert the Phenom X4 9950 CPU on it  and connect the power to the PC, the fan gives out loud noise and the power switch has a orange light. It is just frozen in this state. I have tried it for about 3-4 times. The results are all the same.

Normally, when Athlon x2 3800+ is installed,  the fan should turn on for just a while then turn off after connecting the power to the PC. Each time I installed Athlon X2 3800+ CPU works.

Would it be the BIOS problem or the power supply problem? Can it be solved?
