Brand new xps 8000 crashes and nivid card problems

4 th jan 2010 In the first 24 hours the screen goes to black/ and comes back

I have been using you tube, flickr and yahoo websites

It happened again and this time a box appears on the bottom right hand side 'Nvidia' card has failed/ it has now recovered’

The machine then goes again to black and comes back on ‘ Nvidia' card has recovered’

Saturday I was on youtube and all of a sudden the whole screen turned off and computer crashed  and the tower made a LOUD continuous humming/ roaring sound.

The standby switch on top of the computer was still on! And the tower was making this huge rumbling noise

I pressed the standby button for 5 seconds and the screen came back on saying

Your computer was shut down ….Press enter to safe mode enter computer

This is VERY BAD

The computer has crashed 5 /6 times within 5 days

There is a problem with the nivid card and now the whole tower

I have phoned dell and they will collect this machine

Has anyone else had similar problems withhe xos 8000?

Sorry to hear of your problems but I have not experienced anything you describe with my 8000.

Hello

I am VERY disappointed.

A brand new £1200 tower/ xps 8000 tower

Within 12 hours the computer starts to crash and a warning box appears saying ‘nvid card has failed and is now recovering!

And then it starts to crash within 24 hours and then a HUGE breakdown within 5 days and the whole computer goes down and a LOUD roaring noise comes from the xps 8000 tower

Hi, you're not the only one

I'm having similar problems too. Even if it turns out to be a faulty driver it sucks that Dell are shipping them out like that. See this thread...

badger sThank you so much for the link

I was so frasustrated and feel cheated paying £1200 for a junk machine that crashes and doesn’t work!

A Dell manager has said they will collect the machine today wed jan 13th 2010.

I just want this xps 8000 OUT!

I don’t feel comfortable with a machine that crashes within 12 hours of being delivered and I am only on you tube and yahoo and flicker websites!

RETURN your machine get your money back asap

do u know that dell are also underclocking the GPU on the gtx260 with the xps', because of the weak 350w PSU, givivg you 515 Mhz, and 1080 Mhz processer clock when it should be, 576 MHz, and 1242 MHz processer clock... i made a thread asking what was the story with that, and they deleted it right away..............................

read this,

I had a similar issue.  Received my  XPS 8000 with Nvidia 220 card on 12/29.  I got the same error about 5x that first day.  I checked Dell's driver website and it said I had the latest video card driver which was dated 6/09.  So I went to Nvidia's website and they did have an updated driver with a 11/09 date.  I updated the driver and it stopped 95% of these errors.  I've still receive a few (unfortunately) in the past couple weeks.  But I was getting about 5-6 a day prior to updating the driver.

smashed909,

Found it. It was not removed for the content. They removed it for character substitution used to communicate a profane word. As to the GPU, one of you with the GTX260 should run GPU-Z and tell us what the settings are for the GPU Clock, Memory.

I have the Dell GTX 280 at GPU Clock 602MHz, Memory 1107MHz. The retail has 670/1458. So it would not surprise me if the Dell GTX 260 is also underclocked.

yeah, i got an email explaining why it was removed..

i really want to buy the xps5100 since my dimension5000 has never giving me any problems in over 5 years of heavy use.

but the specs on the gtx260 say "Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply needed", and if the xps5100 is using a 350w PSU hows it all gonna work ?

how much of a difference does underclocking a gpu like this have on performance when gaming,.. is it very noticable difference to the retail speed ?

It made about a 90 FPS difference in one of my rigs during a stability test.  It does make a difference.

To Whom It May Concern:  Dell no longer offers the Nvidia GT220 card..which was causing so much havoc with the XPS 8000 line that they also stopped offering the XPS 8000 now.

call and see if you can return the unit...as that card is not fixable..and from what I understand...may cause other problems with other hardware. there is a huge sale on the XPS 9000 that ends today...you need to look at that...

I just bought a refurb 8000 with a gt 220.  Doesnt have any problems.  What is the best card I can upgrade to (or what are the better cards plural) without upgrading psu?  Thank you

since I got the core i7 860 with 6gb ram, 750hdd, 22 inch monitor, with tax and ship all for $951 and change I was planning on upgrading the gpu anyway.  Do you know what other video cards I can put in without upgrading the psu.  Hopefully removing the 220 I will have no probs.

sure.  the nvidia 240 & 260 seem to be running fine...and there are aslo a few ATI options as well.  just make sure you have the power supply to run some of the faster cards in you to that route.
