CPU & Ram upgrade for Optiplex 760 SFF

Hello everyone! I have one very good system - Dell Optiplex 760 SFF, refurbished of course.

Nowdays the programs are getting heavyer and heavyer and I think my system is giving up.

I want to put inside 16GB of ram DDR2 800MHZ, but on your website it's said that it only supports up to 8gb, while intel says that it can support up to 16gb? Now I'm confused.

Also I have one Xeon 3370 or 3388 laying around. It has the same specification as Core 2 Quad Q9650 and as I know it is supported in my system?

The ram that I want to buy is from Samsung PC-6400, the exact same type that I have now, but the only difference is that now I only have 2 plates of 2gb. I will buy 4 plates of 4gb of ram. Will it work? Also I have the same question for the CPU - will it work?
Of course, I'll first upgrade my BIOS to the latest A16, that is available now.
Thank you. The current processor now is Core 2 Duo E8400.

Hi,

8GB is the amount of RAM Dell tested in its factories before the product launch, You may give it a try to see if supports 16GB, if it does, Continue using it. However if the system is bricked after the RAM upgrade, that voids the warranty.

Same applies for the processor upgrade aswell. Core 2 Duo and Xeon 3370 , Both works on LGA 775 sockets.

The ones Dell shipped with this model were

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo
  • Intel Pentium® Dual-Core
  • Intel Celeron® Dual-Core
  • Intel Celeron processors based on Intel's 775-pin (LGA775

Thank you

Thank you for the detailed an answer. I'll give it a try and I'll post the results. I'm almost sure that 16gb will run fine, as some people have tried on 755's as well and among their results I'm pretty sure it'ill run fine with this max-out.

The only thing that I'm not sure is the Xeon. Because it may support Core 2 Quad Q9650 with the newest BIOS, but what about Xeon? As I now Dell Bios is very restrictive and wants everything to be firstly approved by Dell.

I know people that have tried the 771 to 775 adapter with other xeons and they also work, so If we go with that Xeon 3370 shoud run without problem as it is 775, so no need of modifications to the motherboard etc.

But before I try i want more answers and suggestions, because I love this system and I don't want to lose it.

Hi,

Since the Xeon isn't one of the supported processor's from Dell, Not sure if there We need to give it a try to confirm the functionality.

Thanks

Hi everyone!

@Hakera5 What are the frequencies of the RAM you use to go up to 16gb?

Because i want to try using 4 plates of 4gb at 800MHz or can i use the one with 1600MHz? But for the second choice, i don't think it is supported by the motherboard of my Optiplex 760.

Thank you

You should try DDR2 @ 800MHZ, 4 plates of 4GB /4x4GB/.

Optiplex 760 doesn't support DDR3 (1600MHZ is DDR3).

But first install the latest BIOS update provided by Dell, before you do anything with the RAM or the CPU.

P.S Share the results, please.

Theoretically ram from a specific Vendor will work but the cost of the ram is more than buying a used T3500 with DDR3 and 24 gigs of ram.

ECC, Registered, BUFFERED,  QUAD RANK, Ram will not EVER work. The modules that I have used in 755's and XPS 420's are hard to find and $159 to $200 each (If you can find them at all) with 4 of them being $636 to $800.

Supports DDR2 1066/800/667/533 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
Max. theoretical capacity of system memory: 16GB with specific dimms from 1 vendor and only with 4 memory slots.  Units that only have 2 slots cannot use 8 gig Dimms.

High Density Quad Ranked Ram Absolutely Does not work.
