CPU Upgrade Not Working-Dimension 4300

I plugged in a 2.6Mhz Pentium 4 400FSB and when I plugged the power cable into the box, the fan and front light came on.  Only thing the front power button would do is turn off the fan and light.  I have the latest bios (A06).  I reinstalled the original 1.6Mhz CPU and everything runs fine.

Bad CPU?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, it's possible the processor is bad, or may not be compatible with 4300.

What is the sSpec number on the processor?

are the specifications for the Dimension 4300.

It shows the maximum CPU speed for this system to be 2.0 GHZ.

That would explain why the 2.6 would not run in your system.

It is an SL6PP.  The only difference from the original CPU, that I can find, is the speed, 512 cache in lieu of 256 and 0.13 nano technology in lieu of 0.18.  There are MANY posts out there that indicate up to a 2.8GHz CPU can be used in a 4300.

The Dimension 4300 does support 400Mhz 478 pin Pentium 4 processors, up to 2.6Ghz 400Mhz.

It's another case of Dell not updating their specifications.

I've been reading previous posts on upgrading the 4300 processor, the sSpec you posted should work, as you have updated the BIOS to A06.

All I can think of, it's bad processor.

Hanspuppa,

Dell also states that RAM is limited to 512 yet it has been tested to 1024 which is what I am using now.  MANY people have upgraded their 4300's up to 2.8 GHz CPU's (fastest Pentium 4 that uses a 400 bus speed).  The main issue seems to be using the most up-to-date BIOS but I seem to have another issue.

I updated the BIOS to A06 several years ago (2004?).  I may re-flash it again just because.  The sales receipt from StarMicro indicates the CPU was "tested" but you never know.  I was extremely careful in handling the CPU.  I intend to return this one for a replacement and try it again.

Put the old cpu back and make sure you have the latest Bios.

Newer microcode is in the new bios.  It may be bios locked to 2.4Ghz though.

Prescott CPU's Will not work.

Northwood or Wilamette only  256K or 512K cache Max.

400Mhz FSB Max.  533mhz Northwoods will not work.

I understand the comment that the BIOS may be locked to 2.4 GHz.  Is there any method of reading the BIOS to make that determination?

Hello mikesn5va, Normally when a new BIOS is released, it will be labeled with a new version number.

I have never known of a BIOS release that has changes in the BIOS, listed as the earlier version.

The BIOS may infact, be locked at the speed you and others mention. It may be due to the chipset limitations.

I believe others have mentioned that the specifications for this system may be incorrect, as are many others that Dell releases.

Just some thoughts.

2 512 meg LOW Density Ram parts will work.

I see no reason why the 2.8Ghz part would not work.

I just installed an sl6pp 2.6 ghz processor in my 4300 and it works fine.  The processor you got might not be in working condition, I've read that a 4300 can take up to 2.8 ghz and 1024 mb of memory (2 512 memory cards)

I also put in a 256mb Crucial memory  card in slot 2 and everything is working fine.  Much faster too.  I found my processor on eBay for 30$ and the memory on Amazon for 39$

Just thought I'd post this for anyone who comes across this. Follow all of the steps in here about updating the BIOS to A06. Use the existing heat sink with thermal paste(I used Arctic silver). Make sure the cpu you are installing has the 400mHz front side bus, as the 533mHz bus will not work. The Northwood SL7EY 2.80 GHz does work, be sure to examine the pins(two of mine were bent slightly, which stopped it from seating all the way).  While you are at follow the memory upgrade suggestions as well. I'm running the above processor with 1GB ram and it is all recognized. Find the Startech compatible 400watt power supply and install it, the extra power gives you a boost. I did all of the above for under $150.00 and am able to squeeze a few more years out of this Dimension 4300 while I save up for the parts I want to assemble my next computer. I am done with store bought, unless it is a laptop. ;D
