CPU Upgrade for Dimension 9150

I am looking for some help on upgrading the CPU in my Dimension 9150

I am using it as a media server and am needing a more powerful CPU for transcoding

Currently I have a Intel D 950 @ 3.4GHz (socket 775)

The motherboard is a Intel D945PDK

According to Intel`s website I can fit upto a Core2Duo @ 2.66GHz (E6700)

But from reading around I am finding conflicting stories whether it will work or not as the BIOS may not allow it

Is there anywhere I can find out what CPU the latest BIOS from Dell will allow ?

According to the support page the latest bios update is Dell Dimension System BIOS, A07 (XP051A07.EXE)

I have had a search around for the info but cant find any

Or does anyone know what the best CPU I can fit to this computer is ?

Thanks for any help !

RE: CPU Upgrade for Dimension 9150

The fastest processor supported for the XPS400/9150 is the Pentium D 960, that's not much of an upgrade from the D 950

Check that you have the latest BIOS version installed, because with BIOS version A04, support for newer processors was added.

The XPS 400/Dimension 9150 does not support Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors.

The Core 2 requires a different voltage regulator design than what's on the XPS 400/Dimension 9150 motherboard.

You may be in the market for a Precision T3500 as an upgrade.
