CPU upgrade for Optiplex 760

I have an Optiplex 760 Mini Tower with an e7400 CPU. I originally thought this supported VT-x extensions but it appears from checking at http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx#26547 and via http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/linux-tip-how-to-tell-if-your-processor-supports-vt/  that my specific revision doesn't. I therefore want to know if its possible to easily upgrade to a CPU which supports VT-x ?

Either another Core Duo such as an e8400 or a quad such as a Quad Q8200. Both are listed in the OPTIPLEX 760 Technical Guidebook. I particularly wasn't sure about the Q8200 as that uses a 1333FSB so wondered if it required a different motherboard.

Can anyone offer advice?

Thanks

Thanks that's really useful. So how do I work out which CPUs I can put in?

Specifically which CPUs can I use which support VT-x?

Thanks

peteraymond,

The Optiplex 760MT uses two motherboards -
T674K Non-Quad core CPU motherboard
U562N Quad core CPU motherboard

You have the 1st one so you cannot use a quad core CPU on it.

38G73 E7400, 2.8GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
F31F5 E7500, 2.93GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
06YMG Wolfdale Dual Core E7600, 3.06GHz, 3MB, 65W, R0, (With VT)
H399J Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
D923J Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
N654J Wolfdale Processor E8600, 3.33GHz

Hi lee_maomao,

The Dell OptiPlex 760SFF also uses two types of motherboards depending upon the processor one is for quad core and other Non-Quad core CPU motherboard.

Please let me know the service tag of your system so that I could tell you what motherboard is installed on your computer.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

What about G214D?

What are the validated CPU's???

Also is a larger power supply than the 305W unit required when using Quad Core CPU in the Smith Tower.

Is there a copper heatpipe Heatsink?  Looks like the precision 380/390/XPS 410/420 heatsink.
