This is absolutely NOT supported, endorsed, or recommended by Dell in any way, shape or form, but see the post titled "OptiPlex 360 380 760 780 960 Xeon LGA 771 E0 1067A Microcode" at the bios-mods forums in "Confirmed CPU Support Upgrades". Do not disregard the disclaimer!
Good luck!

The Dell Optiplex 380 is a great system to upgrade to a Xeon 5xxx processor. You can get a modified bios at bios-mods forums. I bought an old Dell Optiplex 380 system refurbished from Dell for about $80 with an E7500 Intel core 2 duo processor and upgraded it to a Xeon E5430 for about $20. The cpu benchmark went from about 1800 to 4000. Great little computer to play older games in Windows 7.
