Cant get ethernet port working after re-building hard drive

Hi please please help, we have a problem with a Dell Dimension c521. After a virus we reloaded xp from the original disks and re-loaded the original drivers disk however most of our drivers still have exclamayion marks next to them, most importantly the ethernet port meaning we cannot get that pc on the net.

there is another pc in the house with internet access so i got them (im 60 miles away and have done this by fone !!) to download the driver from Dell. It downloaded and installed on that machine , even tho we didnt want it too, but we went to the download file and dropped it onto a usb flash drive. After checking it was there we removed the flash drive, put it on the other machine and tried to upload the driver but despite it going into a file it wont install.

We tried the original disk again but auto play just brought up advice and didnt install. We have somehow managed to get some files onto the c drive but not it seems what we are after - WHY is this so difficult

please help this is driving me mad - and this is a  process ive done several times before

Try reinstalling the Chipset driver, restart the PC. Then try installing the Network driver.

Did you install the System Utilties and Desktop System Software* for this model?

They should be installed before the chipset.

*may only be needed if you have a dual core system and an ATI video card, according to that page.

I guess you need to read this.

A chipset driver is a small piece of software that's required for the system to recognize and use various hardware, including the ethernet (network) port.  It's loaded during the Windows boot up process. According to this, there are 2 chipset drivers required for the C521, one for the AMD CPU itself and one for some nVidia chips on the motherboard.

The correct order for reinstallation of Windows is XP, followed in order by:

System Utilities

Desktop Sysem Software (if required for this system)

AMD chipset driver

nVidia chipset driver

nVidia MediaShield (if required for this system)

Video driver

Audio driver

Network driver

Modem driver

etc.

Go to www.support.dell.com and click Drivers & Downloads. On the next screen, click Choose by Service Tag. Then enter the Service Tag number for this system. It should be on a sticker somewhere on the tower (separate from the Microsoft Windows XP sticker).

Entering the Service Tag should take you to a page where you can download the latest version of all the drivers needed for this specific PC. You can download them on any PC and burn them onto a CD. Then use that CD to install all these drivers in the correct order on the C521.

Good idea to make note of which cryptic file name is which driver so they get installed in the right order. Or, give them a descriptive file name when you save them on the PC used to download them (eg "AMD chipset", "Video driver", etc.)  Also make note of any special Installation Instructions listed on the page for each driver you donwload.  :emotion-5:

Isn't this fun...? :emotion-18:
