Card Reader XPS 8700

I have replaced the card driver and cable for this system and reinstalled the software. Still does not work. The only place I can find in the Device Manager that mentions the card driver is under the USB connections. I would appreciate if someone with a working driver could tell me if there is another Realtek entry.

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

Please uninstall all the USB Root Hub including the Realtek and reinstall again.

Please PM us the system tag# and the part number of card reader that's replaced.

Regards

After reinstalling the driver it works though the drive icons only appear when a SD or CF cars is placed in the slot. It used to work with drive letters and icons appearing in the Windows Explorer window.

It works fine but I have not been able to "unhide" the empty drives.  The icon appears when a card is put in.  This just is not the way it used to work.

Hi,

Can you please send us the screenshot of disk management window.

  1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. ...
  2. In the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.

Once you are in this windows take a screenshot of all the partitions and send us.

Until and unless a drive letter is allocated in this window, the card reader will not show up in windows explorer when its empty.

Regards

Hema

Hi,

As suggested in earlier post by a link on how to manually assign a drive letter . Please follow the steps and assign the drive letter. When you put in the memory card look for the drive letter, remove the card, go to disk management and assign that drive letter manually.

Unless its done manually the drive will not showup if empty.

I went ahead and manually assigned a new drive letter for the SD card. When I eject the card, the drive disappears off the disk management screen and Windows explorer.

I started this conversation noting that the problem developed after I refreshed Windows 10 because of registry problems. Since that took literally days to reinstall programs and drivers I really cannot do it again.  I replaced the card reader for the second time in 6 months and it works fine but does not display the blank drive icons in Windows Explorer. Certainly good enough to avoid another painful reinstall of Windows 10.

Slightly OT, but does anyone know why the 8700's card reader (Realtek) is so slow to mount the card reader drive slots every time it cold boots? It takes like 4 minutes or so on every cold boot before they (and the two front panel USB ports get mounted and displayed as available in Windows Explorer.

FWIW, they seemed to mount much faster when using the old A03 BIOS--why it's now slower after updating to A10 (since I installed my GTX 970) seems rather suspicious.

If it helps, my specs are as follows:

Dell XPS 8700 | Core i7 4770 3.4GHz | BIOS A10 | Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 | 16GB G.SKILL DDR3 Sniper 1600MHz | EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC | Dell S2340M 23" IPS LED | Seasonic 650W M12II-650 | Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB | Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB | ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 | ASUS DRW-24B1ST | Logitech G100S | Dell SK-8135 keyboard | Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2
