DM051 Memory

A friend has this Dell system and wants to add memory.  He is VERY non-technical and I don't have access to his system - but will to install the memory.  What is the maximum memory for this system, and what memory should he purchase?  He currently is at 512.

The maximum memory for the e510/5150 [aka DM051], approved by Dell, is 4gb [4 x 1gb modules].

See HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

You can buy memory, with free S&H on orders of $40 or more, that's certified to work in your 5150/E510, from HERE, use either Crucial's Memory Advisor or Memory scanner, to find the compatible memory for your system.

As there is 512mb [should be 2 x 256mb modules installed], personally, I would add 2 x1gb modules, giving a total of 2.5gb of installed memory.

I don't know what  a "DM051" is.  Could it be a "Dimension E510"?  or some XPS model?  That is the correct reference.  The Dell on line manuals are HERE but you must know the line and model number.

However, go to www.crucial.com and enter the model number and it will list what is available for this model (and the maxium).  Most of the techies on this forum recommend Crucial as it is one brand that is guaranteed to work in Dell's.  Dell's have a history of being picky about memory and some brands won't work in all models.  Avoid the Kingston Value Ram as it is one brand that is known to be troublesome in Dell's.

Thanks for all of the info - especially the info on what brands are good/bad for the Dell.

In one word, 'Crucial'.

Keep away from KVR [Kingston Value Ram] and memory that not certified to work in your e510/5150.
