DVI audio connection...

Jump to solution

This will be my first digital hookup all my previous connections were VGA.  I'm going to make a DVI connection with my Dell Inspiron 530S Desktop.  I have a VisionTek HD4350 #900289 video card installed.  The card has HDMI and DVI connections.  I realize I will have to make a separate connection for audio.  I'm using a Samsung Monitor/HDTV.  The monitor has an audio connection, [HDMI/PC/DVI-D AUDIO IN], which is where a 3.5mm audio cable is supposed to go.  I have two satellite speakers and a subwoofer set already hooked up to my computer in the line-out connector, so where is the other end of the 3.5 mm cable from the monitor to the computer supposed to go?

It depends on what the Samsung requires.  On "standard" HDMI connections that is both digital video and digital audio.  Usually, if you are using the HDMI input on a TV that is where the TV is expecting the audio and most TV's will not let you select HDMI for Video and some other input for audio.

However, when you use the HDMI connection, the PC sets the HDMI as the default audio playback device and audio to your PC speakers is lost (You can only have one default audio playback device).

If you use the DVI input to the TV then you can use a separate audio connection, but whether the TV is looking for an Analog audio signal (what your PC speakers use from the GREEN jack) or a Digital S/PDIF signal from the PC would have to be determined.  If it's an S/PDIF signal from the PC, according to the Dell manual there is no S/PDIF output on this model.

If the TV audio in is an Analog port, you can connect the 3.5mm stereo plug cable to the GREEN speaker port on your PC (remove the PC speaker connection).  You may be able to use a "Y" connector from the GREEN speaker output and connect it to both the PC speakers and the TV  so you will have audio from both.  Otherwise the best suggestion is to use the video in the TV and the audio from your PC speakers.
