Dell C521 doesn't boot

Hi

I have a Dell C521 in for repair and isnt booting.

it gives 2 short beeps and one long one. (incorrect bios checksum?)

followed by one long and two  or three very quick bleeps.

a few seconds later a lower 2 tones that hint a bit like "oh dear" or "no go" bit like the Simon electonic game when you fail!

the disgnostic LED is showing just 4 and no other LEDs iluminate at all.

I assume its had a faulty flash.

Is there any way to reflash as it seems to be in a recovery mode awaiting for a bios perhaps?

Are you saying you did a BIOS flash update right before the problem started?

You can try clearing BIOS:

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Reinstall battery - use  a fresh one if this one is old, CR2032 3-volt lithium ion battery. ~$2 at discount stores
  6. Close up and reboot.

Hi

Customer brought it to me in that state.

I have done all of the above and it still remains in "recovery mode".

I assume its possibly looking for a Rom ro Bin file, but Dell don't seem to offer anything other than an EXE.

So just in case I have a replacement board on it's way from Ebay, with the added bonus it has an X2 rather than the Sempron in this system.

Just a shame the Tag numbers won't match.

You could try temporarily jumpering RTCRST on the motherboard to see if that will reset the real time clock in BIOS. Not sure that will do anything more than removing the battery, but might be worth a try...

See the manual for location of RTCRST on the motherboard.

The system is way out of warranty, so not having the Service Tag in BIOS doesn't really matter...
