Dell Dimension 3000 CPU

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 it came with an Intel 80546 Celeron Prescot Destop socket N 320  EO, I would like to upgrade the CPU to a Pentium 3.2 G 800Mhz.  Looking in the manual I see that this PC was available with a Pentium 3.2 800Mhz CPU.  Is this a socket 478 that I need, is the Pentium available in 478, I was told to order a 775 but the old CPU has pins, the 775 has contacts.  Also is there a jumper on the mother board to configure it to 800 Mhz?

Thanks,

The Dimension 3000 only supports Socket 478 P-4 processors.

You can install any of these SOCKET 478 PROCESSORS

Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS Version A03, when added support for newer processors was added, is installed.

The discussion HERE may also, help.

If you want to use a 775, you need to replace the mainboard and memory as well as the CPU. You can probably get all three for $125.

It's automatic, all you need to do, is check the BIOS version and install the processor.

Also, is there a jumper on the mother board to configure it to 800 Mhz Buss, or do I do it in the in the CMOS, or is it automatic?

Thanks

Hi Bev, I did update the Bios to AO3, installed the CPU, it is reconized in the CMOS 3.2GH 800Mhz 1M with Hyper Threding ( I did check the model of the CPU and the PC and it supports it.) when I enable Hyper Threading I do see it in Device Manager twice but the PC does not run right, when I disable yper Threading I see it once in Devece Manager and th PC runs normal again.   I did use the thermal grease.

I have 2G of Dell RAM. Ether way I dont see a difference than before I did the upgrade.

Do you have any ideas?

Check in the system setup, that the OS Install Mode is set to Off.
