Dell Dimension E520 Memory Upgrade.

Hello I have an E520 Running Windows & 64bit. 2 of the 4 Dimm slots are non functioning on the board. According to the manual i can only have up to 1gb per slot. I currently have two 2gb sticks in the functioning Dimm slots. My question is could I put two 4gb sticks in to replace the two 2gb ones? Also I have heard that people have been able to use the Core 2 Quad  Q6700 CPU with the same socket in this machine. Any Ideas?

No, the Dimension e520 does not support 4gb modules, only 2gb, [total 8gb 4 x 2gb modules].

Regards to upgrading the processor, checkout the following discussion:

Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS version 2.4.0 is installed.

Note. Only 65 nm processors with 800 or 1066fsb will work with the E-520.

You can't use 4GB DIMM's ... the chipset limits you to 2GB DIMM's.

According to Intel's specs on the chipset, the Q6700 is supported.  It will then probably work - it just depends on what changes Dell had to make to the BIOS for overall system compatibility.  Always update the BIOS to the latest version whenever upgrading beyond current system capacities (RAM, processor, etc.).
