Dell Inspiron 530 G33M03 motherboard BIOS update

Hi All

I have just replaced myG33M03 motherboard in my Inspiron Desktop 530. It had system BIOS 1.0.18.

I replaced it with the same board G33M03. It came with BIOS version 1.0.13. I need to update the outdated BIOS.

I have downloaded and tried to run BIOS 1.0.15, 1.0.16 and 1.0.18 from Dell. None of these will work. I have installed Vista -32 bit onto one hard drive, and Windows 7-64 on another. Neither operating system will allow me to install any of these versions.

When I install, I get this error,“ The BOIS Bin file was not for this system!”. Then I get a Win flash error saying “No operation” while running Windows 7 and also in Vista.

I read some where that you have to have a Core 2 Duo Intel processor to update BIOS. So I removed my Q6850 with a spare E4400 that I had.

My Inspiron 530 originally came with a G33M02.

I am wondering if the BIOS drivers for the G33M02 are the same as G33M03 drivers? If they are, does anyone know what am I doing wrong?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance Steve

I have fixed the issue of going to 1.0.18 and to Windows 10 without any issues.. You need a motherboard from an Inspiron 530. Not one from a Vostro 400. "The first , not all the numbers on your motherboard, must match these" CN-OFM568-73604-81F-0000. This is the motherboard that I used.

I researched and found the Vostro 400 uses this motherboard, so I downloaded that Bios update from Dell for the Vostro which worked! (1.0.15) I would still like to be able to install version 1.0.18. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Steve.

Assuming that you have the Inspiron 530 MT and not the 530s Slimline model.

As you are using a Core 2 Quad processor, did you upgrade the default 300w PSU, that was installed with all Core 2 Duo/G33M02 systems, to the 350w [or higher] PSU the Core 2 Quad/G33M03 systems require?

The BIOS versions are the same for both the G33M02 and the G33M03 motherboards, the only BIOS version you need install is the latest version

I have no idea what you are 'doing wrong', are you following Dell's instructions, as published on Dell's download page.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I have a 480 watt PSU. I installed it when I installed the Core 2 Quad processor and upgraded from 4GB. RAM to 8GB. RAM. I made the upgrades when I installed the first G33M03 motherboard.

Thank you for responding. I have the vostro 400 bios 1.0.15 installed. 1.0.18 will not install on this computer. I have the G33mo3 mother board with a 480 power supply, a Core 2 Extreme q6850 processor. 8Gb ram. I even tried another G33mo3 motherboard with no luck. I was reading in another forum where someone used a 2.0GHz duel core processor and installed Windows Vista, the operating system that it originally came with my Inspiron 530. In order to get the 1.0.18 bios to install. I tried doing that and had no luck at all. When ever I attempt to install 1.0.18, I get an error message that said that "This BIOS Bin file was not for this system!" whether I try to update in Vista or Windows 7. I just found out that the existing bios version 1.0.15 will not allow me to upgrade to Windows 10 with a q9650 processor. I get an error that says that because of the processor Windows 10 cannot be installed on this machine. I use a q9650 in other computers with Windows 10 with no issues. So I am using a q6850 instead. Any advice would be appreciated. I would really like to use a q9650 and bios version 1.0.18. the processor runs cooler and has newer technology.

Thanks Again

Steve

I am having the same issue.  I have a 530s and want to put a Q9650 in it so I upgraded the motherboard from a G33M02 to a G33M03 (upgraded the power supply as well).  According to this discussion (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19367969) You need to have BIOS 1.0.15 or higher installed for the motherboard to recognize the Q9650.  Since the motherboard I got of eBay was only at 1.0.13, I went on the Dell support site and download the latest BIOS which was 1.0.18.  Then I got the same “The BIOS Bin file was not for this system!” error.

Thanks for the the tip of using the BIOS for a Vostro 400.  Downloading 1.0.15 for the Vostro 400 worked for me and since I just wanted the Q9650 to run Windows 7 64.  I am done for now....

Regarding the problem of getting to 1.0.18 have you tried to update the BIOS from a bootable USB drive rather than run the WIndows utility?  There was a good discussion of that here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19265195

That discussion kind of made me wonder if I need to go to 1.0.18, but from your problems it seems this will be necessary if I want to go to Windows 10.  Give the bootable USB method a shot.

I believe you have a typo (two numbers transposed) in the motherboard model.  For the Inspiron 530 it is Dell part number FM586 (in the second group of numbers).

The motherboard I picked up on eBay was the GN723 (for the Vostro 400).  Both the FM586 and GN723 are Foxconn part number DG33M03 but it seems they are not 100% compatible if you are upgrading to WIndows 10 and have a Q9650 CPU!

My bad, I transposed the numbers.

Yes you are right, they are not identical motherboards.

If you have CN-0FM586-73604-***-**** . I used the ( * ) asterisk in the model numbers to show that these other numbers are irrelevant in making my point. This is an Inspiron 530 board. This will give you Bios 1.0.18. You will be able to use a q9650 processor, and you will be able to go to Windows 10 with 8Gb ram. I put it all together this weekend and it's running great. Finally.

If you have CN-0GN723-73604-***-**** board, this is a Dell Vostro mother board. With this board, you will be able to use a q9650 processor using Bios 1.0.15. You will be able to run Windows 7 with 8 Gb ram That's as far as you will get. You will not be able to go to Windows 10. After extensive research on the internet, it all comes down to the Bios version on this board that holds you back from upgrading.

They both carry the DG33M033 Foxconn product numbers.

They look identical except for the CN- model numbers.

When I was buying DG33M033 motherboards on eBay, they show that they will fit both Inspiron and Vostro machines. You don't want these boards, if they have this number CN-0GN723-73604-***-****.

Sure they will work but, not if you want to use a q9650 and want to go to Windows 10.

Please feel free to ask, if you have any other questions. I have gone all through this issue, and fell that I have nailed it down.
