Dell Inspiron 546 - CPU Upgrade Options

Hi there,

I have an Inspiron 546 with an Athlon X2 240 cpu.

Can anybody tell me what my upgrade options are for the cpu ?

I entered my service tag into the dell website but there does not seem to be a link to give details on the motherboard etc. All I can find is the as built configuration list that does not have any hotlinks to data sheets etc.

Thanks in advance to anybody who can help.

I plan to do the same thing. The mobo/chipset is a 780g with the ATX mini tower form factor. I plan to get an AMD 3.0ghz 4x Phenom 945 in the 95 watt version. I wouldn't go over 125 watts with a cpu for it. If you look at the CPU offerings from Dell for the 546 you can get an idea of what will work. I doubt if the mobo is different than the 780g for any of them. It seems like nobody wants you to know the mobo name but Dells uses the 0F896N part # for the mobo. I would try to stay with 95 watts but that's just my idea. The Phenoms have the L3 cache which helps a lot according to bench tests. My Athlon 2.8 4x 930 is just a phenom with the L3 cache missing.

How did you find out the mobo p/n ?

I searched their site with the p/n and came up blank.

Thanks.
