I have a Dell Inspiron 580s operating on Windows 7. I've had this computer since 2010 and had zero issues with it. However, now when the computer starts up, it just began making excessive noise for several minutes and then the noise goes away. The hard drive sounds like it is running hard and the light blinks along with it. It sounds as if it is scanning something...excessively. After a few minutes, it stops and then there is no more noise. The only other time it makes this action/sound is when it wakes from sleep mode. I ran the diagnostic tools and no problems can be found or identified. The computer is otherwise working fantastic, fast, and with zero problems.
Any advice on what may be making this noise, whether it's a problem, and what I can do to address it?
I would suggest you try cleaning the dust out of the fans, including the video card fan if you have one. Then see if the noise situation is any better. If not, let me know.
I cleaned the dust, but it didn't remove the sound. However, this did help me isolate the sound. The sound is coming from the power supply/fan, which is labeled bestec model tfx0250d5w. It ran loud upon start up for about 10 minutes or so and then it stopped making the noise and the fan is now running at a quiet pace.
Any advice on how to proceed with addressing the noise at start up, or is there a bigger problem that requires a replacement part?
Replacing the power supply isn't hard. But running loud for 10 minutes is not what you should expect. So tell me, was the noise problem sudden or has it gradually gotten worse over time?
I have the same model and my Power Supply also gets loud, but it is more random than just at startup. I actually can make it stop by lightly tapping on the top of the power supply with the handle end of a screwdriver. Trying to decide whether or not to just replace the power supply. It came with AcBel PC6036.
I have the exact same issue, dell 545s purchased 2010, in dec 2013, i heard noise at start up...thought it could be the hard drive but on opening up the box i see it is the power suppy...I vacuumed the fan the best i could but the noise is still there (albeit a bit quieter) for about 40 sec on start-up only. any ideas?
