Dell Optiplex 320 with Intel Core2 Quad Q6600/Q6700

I am calling out to anyone that has attempted this upgrade. The rest of you who just run my information into stock specification and compatibility listings, stay away. Again, don't tell me it can't be done unless you've TRIED it.

I have an Optoplex 320. It has a ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 Professional chipset, and an LGA 775 Socket. I am running the latest BIOS 1.1.12. My current CPU is an Core2 Duo E6550, and yes it's supported and fully functional. If you believe it's not, once again, leave this post.

According to Wikipedia, the Q6600 and Q6700 should now work for this particular machine. Several others users have also reported it working, but I can not get a hold of any of them and details given were unfortunately vague. Upon installing I get a solid amber light, no boot, and fans on full throttle. Swapping the CPU's out returns the machine to functionality.

The Q6600 is guaranteed to work (in general), and was tested prior according to the seller.

And again, the system boots fine with my E6550 CPU. No motherboard problem.

Would a BIOS reset help? Or is there a newer (be it official or custom) BIOS? Or maybe, the 305W PSU (Now 11 years) has degraded to the point where it can't supply enough power to the quad core to boot?

No, I'm not interested in buying a different motherboard or machine.

Thank you for your time.

I see, thanks for that bit of information. I reset it by removing the CMOS battery and discharging the machine. While it did not solve the issue that's definitely good to know, thanks.

As stated in my description, the BIOS is up to date (as far as I can find). Would you recommend using a BIOS update for a different Optiplex Model? I have found I had to download drivers for a 755 to get rid of driver errors on my 320.

"According to Wikipedia, the Q6600 and Q6700 should now work for this particular machine. "

Wikipedia is not fact its guesses by users.  The 330 is not a 320. Core 2 Quads ARE NOT supported in the 320.

The 320 has other issues.  With the latest bios it supports 3 GIGS of ram MAX.  4 Gigs Will not post.  The onboard Radeon 1100 integrated Graphics does not give back the frame buffer if you add a PCI-E card so your maximum ram is less than 3 gigs total.

As stated in my question description: "My current CPU is an Core2 Duo E6550, and yes it's supported and fully functional. If you believe it's not, once again, leave this post." Core2Duo is a newer technology, and was released after the 320, hence why Dell never confirmed compatibility. And I am aware of the Graphics Card issue. I have 4GB installed, and I can see 3.5 in Windows.

I have actually just signed up for an account and was awaiting verification. I will do so, thanks.

As stated earlier 320 is not a 330.  Does not support 1066 or 1333mhz fsb . supports 533mhz and 800mhz fsb. PC2 8500 is not supported by the chipset.

I do not believe 45nm wolfdale is EVER working in a 320.

Nor do I believe above 800mhz fsb is working properly if at all.

note: update your bios to new version

Listen, the CPU currently installed in my Optiplex 320 is an E6550, and yes that means 1333MHz. My computer is fully functional. I am really just trying to reach out for people that have "tried it" before, because there are simply too many naysayers that are great for pulling up charts and specification sheets, but not much else. Here is the exact quote from Wikipedia: "* BIOS Must be upgraded to the latest version to Support Quad CPU's And 1066FSB CPU's with 65nm Lithography ONLY, BIOS glitch only allows for up to 3 GB or RAM, versus the typical 4 GB". I know it's wikipedia, but the nice thing about its content is that its written by USERS not manufacturers. Which means, at least in terms of product specifications, there is some truth to it. Look how specific this description is; do you think someone would have written it had it not worked for them?
