Dell Optiplex 380 - CPU Support

I have a DELL Optiplex 380, just bought it used for a cheap upgrade for my nephew who's been using a Pentium 4 the past few years. Was happy to see that it takes a standard PSU, so was thinking about future upgrades maybe next summer. Warranty still good until Feb 2014.

I stuck in a fanless Sapphire 5450 1GB video card, it has 1x2GB ram. Should work for a while.

I was thinking though, add another 2GB ram, I have an extra 450w PSU, so keep an eye open for a bigger video card... but hoping next summer when used prices drop a bit, possibly dropping in a Core2Quad... like a Q9300 or something.

Does anyone have a link for a CPU support list for this system? Thanks

Is this list based on the standard power supply?  I notice the Q8200,8300,9300 are skipped over.

Just copy/pasted what was in the manual... Google for a pdf of the manual like I did, should be a few copies online. Can't remember the details since my post was 3 months ago. :emotion-1:

Actually, pg 10

Well, you asked if based on a regular power supply... I'm simply answering that I got the list from the manual. All I know is what the manual told me, beyond that I have no idea.

Maybe a power supply issue, maybe a BIOS issue, maybe the manual was printed before those processors came out... no idea. Sorry.

Tom's Hardware Guide forum is usually pretty good for answers like that... as you can see from the thread here, I eventually had to answer my own question. You're the only other person that posted in this thread in the 3 months it was here. :D

You misunderstood my question.  I'm wondering why you can't use those. I read the list, which is how I know they weren't included.

I suspect that it will run any of the processors in this list for the G41 chipset and that the processors listed in the manual are simply the ones Dell chose to validate on the 380 (only ever shipped with or was offered as an upgrade through Dell):
