Dell Optiplex 740 CPU Processor Upgrade Question

I have a Dell Optiplex 740 minitower and want to upgrade the cpu. The current cpu is a AMD Athlon 4600 64x x2 2.4ghz..... According CPUID software the socket is AM2 (940) Family: B Model: B. I'm looking at this :http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-2-AMD-OPTERON-2378-2-4GHz-6MB-QUAD-CORE-PROCESSOR-OS2378WAL4DGI-/271480545854?pt=CPUs&hash=item3f3580623e will this be compatible?

Also, I can't figure out what model the motherboard is the following #'s are off the motherboard: cn:0TT7008-70821-773F0YO (E139765) (HS1806). Hopefully someone can make since of those #'s.

Thanks in advance.

As mentioned by you, the current processor, Athlon 4600, is havng socket AM2 (which is PGA). But Opteron has Fr2 (which is LGA). Hence the Opteron processor is not compatible with the current motherboard.

Thanks for the response. Is there a tri-core or preferably a quad-core processor that would be compatible? I thought you would just have to get a processor that was a socket AM2 and it would work but I guess there's more to it than that.

I found both of these but they're micro-PGA (would that work?) or does it have to be just PGA http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Phenom-X4-9650-2-3-GHz-Quad-Core-HD9650WCJ4BGH-Processor-/221434918687?pt=CPUs&hash=item338e8cb71f

My next question is would either of those be faster than my current processor? I'm wanting to use my computer for gaming which is why I'm looking at upgrading...

Hello mrsmitty89,

Those processors are not officially supported by Dell, they have not been tested to work on your system therefore we cannot confirm functionality, with that being said, looking at the specs, I don´t see why it wouldn't work.

About your other question, the phenom is a little faster, but the performance is not going to improve that much, and if you are looking to use your system for gaming, the processor is not as important as the graphics card is; your system has one PCI Express X16 Slot, which means that you can add a discrete graphics card. The type of card the you can add will depend on the power supply you have, but if your power supply doesn't have p-cables required to provide power to high-end graphics cards, that will limit your upgrade options, and if this is the case, you will need to find a low-profile graphics card that can be used for gaming but it won't give you the performance that a high-end would.
