Hi Asfand_Munib,

Before installing a new processor, please update the BIOS to latest version from Here.

Note : Please save and close all running programs and documents and disconnect all external peripherals (printer, flash drives, external hard drives, etc) and connect the computer to a surge protector before updating the bios.

If all the lights are green and you are not receiving any beep codes from the system then it means that the processor has been installed correctly. Please check if the keyboard lights (Capslock, Numlock, etc) respond when you press the corresponding keys. Please verify the connections on rear of the system and check if they are connected firmly. Also, check if you are able to hear any windows jingle sounds after some time when you power on the system. Please share the exact model of Optiplex 745 you are using as it comes in 4 form factors viz Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), Desktop (DT), Small Form Factor (SFF), and Mini-Tower (MT). A picture is attached below.

Please reply with the information. Will take it further from there.

I think only the C2D 6000 series is compatible with the 745.  Conroe only and no Wolfdale's or Yorkfields.  The E5300 is a Wolfdale.

Did you clean off the old thermal paste and apply new?  Unless the new bio version supports it, I don't think it will work.

yep he did that... but no avail...

Most likely then is that the E5300 is not supported by the Dell bios.  I have the 745 SFF and upgraded to an E6600 which worked perfectly.  In my research, the E5300 was not supported.  Some people look at Intel's website and conclude that the chipset supports the E5300, however, this does not matter if the Dell bios does not support it.  In this case though, I don't see that the E5300 is supported on this chipset if you look HERE.  Click on compatible products on the left side.

You're right: the BIOS has to support the CPU for it to work. Just because the chipset supports a particular CPU does not mean that said CPU will work. Case in point: the OptiPlex GX620 and Core 2 CPUs.

Hi Asfand_Munib,

My opinion was based on the fact that the motherboard is LGA 775 and should support LGA 775 socket CPU's. However, as correctly mentioned by Kelbear1 and rdunnill, BIOS support is also necessary.

Let me research into this issue. I will keep you posted.

This is asked all the time.  Wolfdale's 45nm and Quads DO NOT and WILL NOT Ever Work.

The Specs say:

WOLFDALE DUAL CORE PENTIUM Is NOT a Core 2 Duo.

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/optiplex-745-series-%28desktop-mini-tower-and-small-form-factor%29

CT2404444

  • DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •
  • upgrade for Dell OptiPlex 745

533 aka PC2 4200 is TOO SLOW for ANY 745 with ANY processor.

667 aka PC2 5300 ram works with some but not all and must be 5 5 5 12 timing.

800 aka PC2 6400 ram works but must be low density and 1R or 2R

4R aka Quad Rank ram Does not ever work.  You cannot mix ranks.

Memory should be installed in the white ear slots then the black ones.  So not 1 2 3 4 but rather 1 then 3   then 2 then 4.

Max Dimm Size is 2 gigs aka 8 gigs total.

Not all units have 4 slots so you can get either 4 or 8 gigs of ram to work.

Must be Low Density,  Must NOT BE ECC, Must Not be Buffered, MUST NOT BE REGISTERED.

Ram labeled Fully buffered will not work.

max 4GB of ram 800MGz in each slot 4x1Gb or only in 2 slots with 2x2GB

Hi,

The 745 tower/desktop/small form factor will take 4x  2GB DDR2 800MHz memory sticks for a maximum of 8GB.

The speed of the memory doesn't have any bearing on the maximum allowed.
