Dell Optiplex 755 - Windows 7 and internal speaker

i have a Dell Optiplex 755 that i have done a clean install of Windows 7 on.
all is working OK, but i am having an audio problem.

I installed the Vista audio drivers for this model from the Dell website and the audio appears to be OK (windows detects it and gives volume control).
however i was expecting to hear sound from the internal speaker, but i get no sound at all.

should i be able to get sound from the internal speaker?

You have to install the OEM sound driver so that the AUDIO ESP control panel "see's" the internal business speaker.  Once you do that everything will work the way it did before.  The OEM AD198X sound max driver is not optional.

Most of the drivers are native to windows 7 8 and 10.

Audio, Chipset and INTEL AMT SOL HECI are the exception.

%HECI_DeviceDesc%=HECI_DDI, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_29B4

The AMT AND HECI Drivers are under chipset.

Also the Newest Version of the drivers seem to Apply to All Windows AKA XP, Vista, WIN7

If you don't install all the drivers it wont work and AUDIO ESP wont work.

Chipset must be done BEFORE The Audio so you may need to RE INSTALL as administrator.

The sound driver should be listed as Soundmax AD198X not microsoft UAA HD Audio.

Until you properly install the OEM driver it will not work. The oem driver installs the AUDIO ESP control panel that "detects" the speaker.  The Generic Microsoft driver does not support the internal business speaker.

AD198X and ANALOG Soundmax AUDIO must have AUDIO ESP to detect the speaker.

AUDIO ESP is the Soundmax Control panel Applet that "sees" speakers and headphones etc plugged into the audio codec OR NOT.

The issue is that by default windows  7 or 8 or 8.1 or 10 will use a generic HD Audio driver and therefore things like the internal business speaker will not work and soundmax Audio ESP is non existant.

The solution is to install the Dell driver and then let windows update decide if the driver needs whql update.

This is a common problem.   The Audio ESP function that asks whats plugged into the port is not enabled in the generic win7, win8, win10 driver.  You also have to install DOTNET 4.0 and Directx June 2010

BEFORE installing this driver.  You also have to add the feature back for Legacy Direct Show from control Panel.  If you do all the right things in the right order it will work.  Control Panel, All Control Panel Items,  Programs and Features, Turn windows features on and Off,

Then do the checkboxes.  You MUST BE online when you do this because it will whine about not finding the features and needing to download them from windows update.

there's a bit of an information overload here, with lots of links to downloads etc.

can we simplify this a little?

i have a clean windows 7 pro SP1 installation, all windows updates are complete.
i currently only have "High Definition Audio Device" listed in Sound within device manager.
you mention Legacy Components, but i do not have any option for that within windows features.

i have the following files downloaded (but not yet installed)

R174616
Intel_AMT-HECI_A02_R255437
Intel_AMT-SOL--LMS_A02_R255438
R164900

what order do i install these in, and do i require anything else to be downloaded and installed?

The driver for audio is from Vista.  Legacy Features are DX9 and DX10

1st  do Chipset

ftp.us.dell.com/.../R174616.exe

2nd  do   HECI

ftp.us.dell.com/.../Intel_AMT-HECI_A02_R255437.exe

3rd do   SOL

ftp.us.dell.com/.../Intel_AMT-SOL--LMS_A02_R255438.exe

Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) with Setup.exe File for Intel_AMT-HECI_A02_R255437.exe

Then restart and do audio

installed that and i got this error at the end

i feel we're not really getting anywhere here.
i installed (or attemted to install) the 4 items you listed.
the end result was that the audio works with external speakers, but not with the internal speaker.

The 755 works fine with windows 7 and the drivers from vista.

Enable audio ESP in control panel and restart.

There are 379 then 178 then 38 windows updates over 12 reboots.

Windows 7 updates are particularly troublesome these days.

The    business "speaker" is optional not available on every unit and you must max all the volume sliders to hear it.

You did not say that you installed Directx June 2010 dxsetup.exe patch.  You continue to state that this and that and the other "doesn't work "  however I know that it does and I have 755, 760, 780, 960, 980 machines that "it works" fine on when proper drivers are installed as administrator and Updates are applied in the correct order. Everything from MSDOS 1.0 to Windows 10 works fine on these systems.

"Enable audio ESP in control panel and restart." is already enabled in control panel.

i'm only saying "that and that" don't doesn't work as i followed your 4 step install list and 2 of them gave errors.

According to Dell Optiplex 755 Manual test the Microphone by following steps:

  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Sound Recorder.
  • Click the Record button, and speak into the microphone.
  • The green waveform should react to your voice.
  • To end the recording, click Stop.
  • To hear your recording, click the Play button.
