My Dell Precision 490 currently runs 2 x Intel Xeon 5130 (Woodcrest) 771 LBA socket. Would the following Intel Xeon 5160 be compatible with my system. My mobo is ODT031 / Chipset 5000X / Southbridge 6321ESB.

I have tried a Intel x5365 and it always comes up as a unsupported CPU. I am running BIOS revision A08. Is there more magic sauce involved such as a non-general release BIOS rev?

Okay. If when some one searches the Internet for an answer Dell 490 Upgrade options. I can confirm the fallowing. Xeon X5355 2.66 does in fact work in Dell 490 with the last available update. Quad Core. 1333 mhz bus 8 megabyte cache. X5365 3.00 Works.
Tried a a few Eseries Xeon Quad Cores 2.83 3.00. No go. Dempsy 3.7 ghz works dual core. Next will try a Dempsy at 677mhz 3.00 ghz. Going to pad mod BSEL and jump the fsb to 1066. Possibly 4.2 ghz.
Will try tonight. Pad BSEL 1066 3.7. Jump it to 1333. will post my results !

Bios should be updated before CPU change.
CPU's should be Matched Sets where the S Spec is the same.
Then with the correct parts
two 2 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5130 processors,
two 3 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5160 processors
two 3 GHz Quad Core Xeon X5365 (Clovertown) processors

I believe your 490 will work fine with any 51xx cpu. The 5100 series is dual-core, the 5300 series is quad-core. As I understand it, all Precision 490 systems will run the 5100 series dual-core chips, but there is a mysterious motherboard revision that allows the use of the 5300 series quad-core chips.
I currently run my 490 with the chips you are looking for, the 5160 dual-core 3.0. Twin cpu's each with 2 cores. I just purchased two of the 5355 quad-core chips to replace my two 5160's, keeping my fingers crossed they work with my motherboard. The twin 5160's are great, there isn't much I can do to really max out the power, until I start encoding video, and that is what I built this machine to do, and even now it does it very well and at high speed. I should get my new cpu's in a few days.
Definitely make sure you get matched chips, meaning same revision and stepping numbers.
Revisions run by these SL9RT, SLABS, and SLAG9, in alphabetical order from oldest to newest, meaning the SL9RT (max temp 56.5c) is older than the SLAG9 (max temp 65c).
Stepping numbers are either B2 or G0, I suggest the G0 because it allows the chips to idle at a lower wattage (less power and heat).
I would also look at your bios. I just updated mine to A08 (newest) from A06 with no problems, but it probably wasn't necessary. I think you want A06 or higher, that revision added support for new processors. It won't change the motherboard accepting the quad-core cpu's, but it might help ensure the dual-core's work for you.

Hi
Many thanks for such a detailed reply. Have already updated my BIOS to the latest revision. I read elsewhere on this forum that to run quadcore's you need to have the "Clovertown" DR054 mobo. Hope thats of some help to you. Lets know how you got on with them.

Searching the internet found this thread. Am about to test several different versions of Quad Core's on a Dell 490. Have two 490's. The first one I upgraded to Intel X5355 Quad core. After updating the Bios. Purchased new $50. each with shipping.
They are plentiful and inexpensive on Ebay averaging $40-$50 for a used matched pair. The board revision that accepts the Quad core Xeons on the 490 as far as I know is GU083. Both of my 490's have this board.
Now. I have 4 T7400's. Decided to upgrade them. The faster processors are still too expensive.
So tried what is known as a BSEL modification. Took a E5450 pair. "13333mhz" Covered the correct Pads with tape on each processor. Well they now all boot at 3.5.5 ghz. 1600 mz. With Set FSB can go to 3.8 ghz. Best to stay at about 3.6gh
though. More Stable.
The Dempsy Xeon 3.7 Dual core is found on dell 490's being sold on Ebay. These have a 1066 bus not like your original chips. I have the same pair as you. No time tonight. This is an oid thread also.
Since the 490 has a 1333 mz bus. Why not look at the Xeon List on Wikapedia check out the Dempsy's. they have Hyper threading. I bought two of Ebay shipped $20.00 3.7. Bought a few more Dempsy's $5.00 and $6.00.
Will try them in a few days. If I am lucky and no VID Pad Mod(Volt Modification) is necessary. BSEL 1066 to 1333. Will take this dual core chip to 4.5 ghz. My bet is the Dell 490's being sold by Dealers on Ebay with these 3.7 mz Dempsey's
are the revisions that will not take quad cores.
Dempsey's have Hyper Threading . So at 4.5 ghz two threads with two virtual threads. It might out perform or equal a 2.66 ghz Quad core? Have to sleep. Will play tomorrow and see what works and doesn't. Then Post it here.

I have unfortunately had the exact opposite experience. I have a Precision 490 running a pair of 5130s with my BIOS updated to A08. Unfortunately, when i drop the 5355's in I get Incompatible processor detected. Apparently all Precision 490's are not created equal.

Hmmm,
Will get back to this thread, Currently working on over clocking a T7400. Happy Holidays and modding. I get that error on an old HP DC 7800 small for factor. Replaced the Q9300. Put that cpu into another board. Replaced it with an E6400
which will be OC with a pad mod.
Computer runs fine with 64 bit Vista Business. With that error on Boot up.

I wish I had listened to all of you but I purchased a pair of "Intel Xeon QC E5320 1.86GHz/8M/1066 SL9MV" for my Precision 490. I figured there were mixed results from people and there were no definitive yes/no compatibility, and I wasn't sure if maybe the 1333 bus was the problem but hey, MAYBE it would work.. Maybe the E5320 is a no-go but a E5345 would have worked? Who knows.
Initially I knew I had to update my A02 to the A08 BIOS. So I installed Windows just for this, immediately updated, went off without a hitch, I then took out the 5110 and put in the new pair, and it boots and lets you think you have success until it says the dreaded "system halt, incompatible processor."
I took out one of the chips, maybe it works on just one?
No.
I then reset my CMOS, did it fix it?
No.
I should have listened to all of you, but considering I got the system for free and the matching pair of CPUs only cost $15 +$5 ship, I'm not really at any loss. So I bought a pair of 5150s (to give the red dragon a little more juice) for $7+$5 ship. Frustrating, but I had to tell my story.
Oh, the most important factor of them all?
I have the DT031 motherboard!!!! The first revision. The only clues I previously had were "the later ones mght do it", well, now I know the DT031 isn't one that will!

hi when i tried to upgrade my two xeon cpus in the precision 490 workstation with two XENON Quad-Core 2.66 Socket 771 HH80563KH0678M chips they are only showing up as dual cores?

What is the processor model that you are using? When I Googled your number it's coming up as an E5350. I can only tell you that I used the X5355 and ultimately had success. The key to using the Quad Cores is to have a Motherboard that shipped after 1/31/2007. From what I've seen all of the ones before that were probably not compatible with the Quad Cores. Is the E5350 on the compatible processor list? I'm thinking that it may not be but I don't have the list handy right now to check it.
By the way with dual X5355's I'm getting a CPU mark of 7.5 out of 8.0 in the Windows test that comes with Windows 7. I have it installed with 16 GB of RAM and a Seagate Momentus Hybrid Hard Drive (750GB). I'm shocked that it runs as well as it does for a 5+ year old machine. Glad I did the upgrade.
