Dell Precision 490 Graphics Card Upgarde

Hello

I am new to this forum and am looking for some advice and assistance.

I have a number of Dell Precision 490 workstations that have served me well for architectural CAD over many years. They are reasonably well configured with dual Xeon 5160 CPUs (4 cores in total), 16 Gb of RAM and Nvidia Quadro FX4600 graphics cards. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. These computers are now starting run a bit slow with 3D (mainly Trimble SketchUp) and I would like to update their graphics cards so as to get a couple more years of service out of them. I would prefer to upgrade using Nvidia GeForce or AMD Radeon cards rather than their workstation equivalents due to cost and my past experience being that Nvidia Quadro cards do not sem to perform any faster than their GeForce mainstream cards. I would like to limit the cost to about $100 to $150 per graphics card.

I am hoping to get some feedback from members who have successfully (or otherwise) installed newer graphics cards in Dell Precision 490 workstations. I was hoping to be able to upgrade to something equal in performance to either a GeForce GTX 750 or a Radeon R9 270. From my reading, I understand that there may be some compatibility problems between the PCIe 1 bus that is provided with the Intel 5000x chipset on the Dell Precision 490 and the newer graphics cards which all seem to be PCIe 3. I would be willing to use older PCIe 2 graphics cards if someone has had success with these.

Many thanks to all the members who read this posting and especially to those who are able to offer some advice and assistance.

Hello Hema

Thanks for your advice but it does not help. The Dell Precision 490 computers that I have are already equipped with Quadro FX4500 graphics cards but these are now quite old and I am looking for something more powerful to give what are otherwise good computers a new lease of life. The Dell store lists a whole range of mainstream, not workstation, graphics cards for sale (and therefore presumably suitable) for the Dell 490 including various GeForce and Radeon. It would be appreciated if you could confirm or otherwise if the graphics cards listed in the Dell store as being available for the Dell Precision 490 will work with that computer.

I am still seeking any comments or advice from community members who have successfully installed a modern graphics card in a Dell Precision 490. I hope that I can get some assistance on this matter.

Many thanks for reading this post.

Regards

Nick

Upgrade the Bios to current BEFORE trying a new card.

A card that I know works thats $200 would be

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 2GB GDDR5 128bit   02G-P4-2966-KR  it comes with a 2 X 6 pin to 8 pin Y cable so the stock power supply should be fine.

more than 2 Gigs is not going to improve the card and it will raise the price.

Make no mistake though this is not going to perform 4K full screen video.

For that you need 3  way SLI GTX 980's and a 1500W power supply in an Area 51 Triad.

Hi,

What is the best graphics card to add for Gaming/CAD without changing power supply

What changes do i need to do to install a GTX 980 graphics card?

How can I add USB 3 support to his system?

Gaming and CAD are mutually exclusive.

980 would have UEFI bios and wont work EVER.

Best card for that old of a system would be

Dell 1G28H Y451H NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 1.5 GB GDDR3

Game wise its about as good as a GTX 260

Cards and Drivers for CAD are not the best for games but they will work.

Hi - I have been trying to find an answer to a lag problem in Windows 7 64 bit with my Dell Precision 490 with Nvidia video cards.   It has always had a small lag in menus since I got it used and put my dual monitor card in it.  Here is the copy of the post I have been posting to various forums and tech support pages for Nvidia, Gigabyte, etc...

I have a Dell Precision 490 Workstation - I had issues with it
shutting itself off very frequently.   It was strange, it could work
all day no problem.   I would come down in the morning, and it might
be shut down, or I try to log in, and it shuts down.   When I try to
restart it, it starts, then dies, sometimes before the POST test can
even really start.   Other times about 10 seconds in, and sometimes
even after I've logged in and just started working.   It barely ever
shut down after that.  I could work all day no problem.   I have a
128Gb Kingston SSD drive as a boot drive, and a 1 Terabyte Seagate as
another for data.   I tried swapping both (I don't feel bad about
spending the money on these, they were over a year old, it's nice to
have spares lying around).   Neither made a difference.

Another issue I was having was basically a worsening of what I was
used to.   For some  reason when I set this computer up (Windows 7 Pro
64 bit, btw) it always had this short little lag in places, like pull
down menus would take a second in some browsers..   I use Explorer ++
as my file manager..  and usually when I start browsing directories
the second level I get to hangs for a couple seconds..  I thought
nothing of it, it's been doing that all year and other than that the
system is very speedy, I handle multiple large PDF files at a time
with ease...

Lately the pull down menus take much longer

I bought a new video card.  I had an nVidia 8400GS handling two
monitors.   I put in a Radeon 240 with 2Gb.   I didn't like the
software and for some reason I couldn't get it to work with my two
monitors, and my DVI-VGA adapter has some extra pins that won't fit in
the ATI...
Despite this my system started working great!   No crashing, and for
once my pulldowns were instant...

I picked up a GV-N730-2GI (Gigabyte nVidia 730 2Gb) and tried that..
The software I am used to, everything worked great..   But now I am
getting the hangs again.   Has anyone heard of this?  I'm not a gamer,
I use my pc for work, for browsing, for logging into work sites,
managing sometimes large pdf documents, etc...   I just want speed and
reliability..

It's obviously an nVidia thing since two cards so far apart in quality
exhibit this..  or just an nVidia incompatibility with my system?
Maybe just a simple setting somewhere?   I use to be in hardware for
many years but I dropped out of that business over a decade ago..  lol
- I just want it to work now...
