Does anyone know if I can use 32 gb (4x8GB) of non-ECC ram in a Precision T1700 tower? The spec sheet says ECC ram to is required to get 32 gb but I was thinking of getting 2x8gb now and another 2x8gb later.
Theok65,
Below are the memory specs for the T1700 system.
Memory Type DDR3 Synch DRAM Non-ECC and ECC
Memory Speed 1600MHz
Memory Connectors 4
Memory Capacities Up to 8GB
Minimum Memory 2GB
Maximum Memory 32GB
Memory Support
The memory offer for Dell Precision T1700 has been updated to support a maximum of 32GB memory in 4 DIMM slots. It also provides support for memory speed 1600MHz DDR3 ECC UDIMM or Non-ECC memory, as well as DIMM Density of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and up to 8GB. Its minimum supported memory size is 2GB.
Any thoughts on whether this specific type of memory may be compatible with the T1700? It seems like a good price for DDR3 ECC memory:
Theok65,
Unfortunately, the Hynix 16GB 2x8GB 2RX4 PC3-12800R DDR3-1600MHZ ECC Server REG SERVER MEMORY will not work in your computer
How about this set?:
It looks to be this memory with heat spreaders:

AND, what part of the specifications for RAM should I be looking at to determine compatibility?
Thanks in advance,
Theo
Don't count on buying by photograph -- what you need to do is ask whether the seller will guarantee compatibility. If they won't, be sure you understand the charges that might be involved in a return.
If you want a guarantee, there are vendors like Crucial and Kingston that will provide that when you buy using their memory configurator.
