Dell Precision T3500 - adding rear case fans possible?

Hi all,

I wanted to add some rear cooling to my Dell Precision T3500.  I recently upgraded to a W3580 cpu with the Cu base Al finned  Dell heatsink and added an AMD Firepro V7900 graphics card.  I would also like better cooling.

So are there headers on the motherboard that will control the fans for me?  If so, where are they?  Do they just take 3-pin connectors?  If not, did you have to adapt the fans to a molex connector?  How did you do it?

There are no headers but tapping SATA power to Molex works.  If you want to control them you could add a fan controller into the 3.5 inch flex bay slot.  This has been done with2 Arctic F8 80mm case fans

There are two 4-pin peripheral (aka-molex) you can tap into depending how many non-SATA drives you have powered. One suggestion I have is use zip ties to affix an 80mm fan to that heatsink in a pull configuration. Rubber bands are to absorb harmonic vibrations. Cools the CPU significantly, and continues air flow from the front intake fans out the back nicely. Doing a 'smoke test' to analyze airflow, I found the two exhaust fans I had added in the back were unnecessary. So eliminated them for noise considerations.

Awesome idea, thank you very much for sharing your ingenuity. The T3500 is an amazing machine. Most people don't realize how flexible and powerful it can be.

Do you see a difference in temps/airflow with just one fan? I am thinking about adding two or three (two on heatsink, one on back case). Also are you concered with the ziptie inside the heatsink? I have herd of some melting under heat

Your cpu socket would melt before the zip tie as they are made from the same material and the fan would melt as well at those temperatures.

Thank you for sharing your ingenuity with the rest of us. I love the T3500! I'm close to maxing mine out to the and your suggestions should help immensely with keeping the inside cool.
