Dell Precision Workstation 490 CPU upgrade question

Hello guys, I am looking to upgrade the CPU on my Dell Precision Workstation 490. It is currently running 2 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz. My Bios is running firmware A03. I am not sure what is the fastest processor I can get for this WS. I was looking at the Intel Xeon x5365 3ghz quad-core. Is there anything faster than this that is compatible with this system? Thanks

You can't just pick any ole XEON from any series and toss it into your 490.  The S Spec and the Bios Microcode and the Socket and and and and count. The 490 uses Intel Xeon 5130 (Woodcrest) 771 LGA socket.  SL9RT, SLABS, SLAG9 S spec must match BOTH cpus.

ODT031 ,DR054, TM199,  TX883  / Chipset 5000X

Bios should be updated before CPU change.

CPU's should be Matched Sets where the S Spec is the same.

Then with the correct parts

two 2 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5130 processors,

two 3 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5160 processors

P/N: HR381 Assembly Chassis, G1, Precision Workstation, 490, PWA Integrated, ESMT

P/N: NN038 Processor 80556k, Xeon Woodcrest, 5140, LGA771, G0

Only a Specific motherboard revision (GU083?) BIOS A01? that allows the use of the 5300 series quad-core chips.

two 3 GHz Quad Core Xeon X5365 (Clovertown) processors

x5355 SL9YM  works in this board.

The support of dual quadcore CPUs depends on the chassis number of the ws490 and is only supported for a G1 chassis according to http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/425708-cpu-upgrade-list. The chassis number can be found using your service tag in Dell Product support - system overview - parts.

ASSEMBLY, CHASSIS, G1, PRECISION WORKSTATION, 490, PWA INTEGRATED

Also note that the SLAED X5365 is rated 120W TDP

Computer Model Precision 490

Shipping Date 10/17/2007

Country France

There are Bios version and motherboard version issues but I do not have a list.

The Dell PrecisionTM  490 is equipped with up to two Dual or Quad-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5100/5300 series 64-bit processors for a total of up to eight execution cores in two sockets.

Intel Xeon

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5110 1.60GHz, 1066 FSB, 4M L2 Cache, 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5120 1.86GHz, 1066 FSB, 4M L2 Cache 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5130 2.0GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5140 2.33GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5150 2.66GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5160 3.0GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 80 watts

Quad-Core Intel®  Xeon®  E5320 1.86GHz, 1066 FSB, 2 X 4MB L2 cache, 80 watts

Quad-Core Intel®  Xeon®  E5345 2.33GHz, 1333 FSB, 2 X 4MB L2 cache, 80 watts

Quad-Core Intel®  Xeon®  X5355 2.66GHz, 1333 FSB, 2 X 4MB L2 cache, 120 watts

BIOS A01 is required before changing CPU.  Some say A08 doesnt work.

Matched means "S SPEC" as well as Series and Type is also required.

SL9YM

SLAC4

SLAEG

The upgrade candidates are essentially the same as the 2006 Mac Pro Workstation.

5160 "Woodcrest" is ok  Manufacturer Part# : MW645  Dell Part# : 311-6138

DELL 3.0 GHz Second Processor for Dell Precision WorkStation 490
