Dell Studio Slim Desktop Video Cards

I am looking to buy one of these computers

Should I get one, I will get 8gb of RAM with the 3.0ghz Quad Core.

My room mate has one and his comes with a 250w power supply. What is a good video card for that model or a power supply that I can upgrade to if necessary?

This is one video card I am looking at which people have said works on that power supply.

This is one that I would prefer but the website says it requires a 350w PS.

Thanks in advance.

Hi rbmimi, I have the 530s version of the studio slim, with the ATI HD 4550. Great system, plays all my games with no problems, you wont get the 9500GT to work because of the 250w PSU, someone has already posted that on the forum, there is not a lot in it between the 9500 and the 4550. If you intend to run vista 64 bit, or windows 7 64 bit, then the 8GB of memory will come in handy, also the Quad CPU. The only down side of these slim systems, there is not a lot of room to upgrade, but I have an good sound card see my specks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just want something that will allow me to play some games decently like World of Warcraft but not looking for a hog either. I think the other parts to the computer would more than make up for the lack of a solid video card. Just wasn't sure the 250 ps could run a video card asking for 300w or higher.

Hi rbmimi, You will have no porblems running the 4550, your PSU will handle it. See my specks.

** Special Note **

Do not buy this at Best Buy. They have an "ATI Radeon HD 4550" but it is not the same video card we're talking about. It's for normal casings, not slims.

PS (no edit feature doh): Amazon.com has an ASUS card similar to the 3450. I believe the VGA part is detachable and the faceplate is. I just bought it with a 3 day speed purchase.

TY
I meant to say 4550 not 3450. If you go to ASUS and type 4550 as the search, you will see the ATI 4550 card. There are four variations via Amazon.
ASUS 4550 is the HDMI edition with FF bracket, then there is one made by "Sapphire" and that is an S-Video HDTV brand with an FF bracket included, and "PowerColor" and sells the HDMI FF bracket separately.

Update- Got the ASUS in. Works like a charm to a degree.

Downside: Of course form factors aren't built for games like GTA IV, but works better than the 256 now. :)

Hey Peeps.  I just wanted to add that I also put the ASUS Radeon HD 4550 in my Dell Studio Slim (250 watt psu) and its working great.

I bought it from Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HPGPU6/ref=ox_ya_oh_product.  It came with an extra bracket for the slim design and worked perfectly.  FYI, it will take 2 bays to fit since the bracket is short and fat vs. long and skinny.

I don't play any of the new cutting edge games but I have been able to play the Orange Box games (Half-Life 2 + Expansions, Portal and Team Fortress 2) very smoothly.  I read somewhere that Dell usually understates their psu's while most video card makers overstate their requirements..

Hope this helps as I was in the same boat not long ago..

Happy Gaming!!
