Dell XPS 400 desktop - need advice for replacement hard drive

I have a Dell XPS 400 desktop and the hard drive finally went south.  It would not allow me to recover no matter what I tried to do.  I am looking to replace the drive for it.  Can anyone recommend which drive would be the best fit for this model?  I found the 320 GB and the 500 GB both 7200's.  Please advise....

Any SATA 7200 drive will be compatible. You have to decide the size you want. The Seagate and Western Digital brand drives are good. I have (2) 500 Seagate drives in my XPS 410 and have been very satisfied.

Hi keithg2,

Thanks for the information regarding the hard drive(s).  If I go to the 500 GB drive, would you recommend that I bump up the RAM too, or would the factory memory be sufficient?

No, there's no need to upgrade the RAM when installing a larger hard drive, default RAM will be fine.

You didn't mention how much RAM you currently have and what OS you're running.

Assuming you're wanting to upgrade your RAM also, if you are running XP and have 1 or 2GB of RAM, you have enough.
If you are running Vista and have less than 2GB of RAM, you should go to at least 2GB, in my opinion.
