Dell XPS 600 freezes during gameplay

I have a Dell XPS 600 that I bought specifically for gaming. Now no matter what game I am playing my computer freezes about 30 min in. It's with all games, new and old. The screen just goes blank and the audio begins to skip and disappears altogether. Maybe someone can help out, I'm sure I can't be the only one having this problem.

My specs:

Intel Pentium Duo Core 3.4ghz

2 gb ram

Geforce 9400 gt video card

Sound Blaster 24 bit

So I found out the problem. I noticed my Dell has these handy lights under the front of USB inputs. They are labeled 1 2 3 4. And they actually light up in a sequence when the computer restarts after a crash. Only the 2 and 4 lights were lit. Looked up the code in the book and it told me that the GPU (graphics card) was having problems. I installed a EVGA Precision, and it said that my GPU was reaching alarmingly high temps. Took it out and noticed the small fan on it wasn't even working. I modded two bigger fans right under my GPU in an extra PCIe slot and it works great now. No more problems. My GPU stays at a steady 60 degrees celsius now :) Sorry Dell, I didnt mean to bash you. I'll think a little more before I post next time.

Your specs are lacking.

What OS?

What Game Specifically?

Pentium D 3.4Ghz?

30 min leads me to believe that power supply and or GPU are overheating.

What does the event log say?

There are stability issues with the NVIDIA nForceTM 4 chipset which is why everyone stopped using it around 2005.

You won't see an event log. You have to go look at it.

Event Viewer is an advanced tool that displays detailed information about significant events on your computer.

It can be helpful when troubleshooting problems and errors with Windows and other programs.

  • Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button,

  •  clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌

  • Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Note

Here's another way to open Event Viewer: Click the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the Search box, type Event Viewer, and then, in the list of results, double-click Event Viewer.
Your video card is below minimum specs and Turbo trash stealing system ram.
I would recommend min 4 gig of ram max is 8 gig.

Recommended Upgrade

part image
TurboCache will steal up to 1.5 GIGS system RAM when running 3D applications like games.
Skyrim Recommended System Requirements. Win XP/7; Quad-core Intel/AMD CPU; 4GB RAM; DX9 compatible sound card.
The GTX 560ti and HD6950 are the two VIDEO cards RECOMMENDED and they may require you to update your power supply.

The june 2010 dIRECTX patch is recommended for ALL games.

Where at in the event viewer would this information be?

Yes, pentium D 3.4 ghz..I am currently using 64 bit Windows 7, but it does the same thing with 32 bit 2005 xp media edition, and 32 bit Vista. It does it with all games including Fallout3, Fallout New Vegas, Star Wars KOToR 2, Skyrim, etc. And I don't see an event log.

There is no one size fits all for all games all systems all the time.

There is no panacea.

Your video card and Ram issues are not going to be fixed in software.

I am never buying a Dell again. I'm tired of jumping through hoops, you're supposed to enjoy your personal computer, not have dreams of smashing it.

Better to build your own desktop, then you don't have to worry about the OEM's support.
