Dell XPS 730 - Now all the sudden LOUD fan noise

I've had this box for a while now and it was nice and quite idle.  Now, all the sudden for the last few weeks the fan goes up loud, down, medium, down, up loud and it's crazy annoying.  Ideas?  I've tried power management settings, no OC, etc.  Even at no OC at all I get the same problem.

Terribly annoying.

Stop on Error only gives me the missing floppy notification.

Sigh.

MikeYbarra,

* Remove the current Nvidia ESA Performance (plus its profiles), Dell Nvidia ESA Monitor, and Dell Nvidia ESA System Update or the NVIDIA System Tools with ESA Support from the Control Panel- Add or Remove Programs
* Download and install the NVIDIA System Tools with ESA Support 6.03 which has the ESA Performance, ESA System Monitor, and the ESA System Update merged into one package

* Download the XPS 730 MIO (Master Input/Output) board firmware A02 to your desktop
* Double-click XPS_730_Dell_System-Utilities-ESA_A02_R182623.exe
* Follow the prompts to extract the file to C:\dell\drivers\R182623
* Click Start- Programs- NVIDIA Corporation- NVIDIA Control Panel- Performance
* Click Custom View- Advanced
* Under System Update, click Update your ESA Firmware
* Click Browse and navigate to the C:\dell\drivers\R182623\XPS730_A02.hex
* Click XPS730_A02.hex
* Click Open
* Click Load FW
* The colored LEDs will revert to the factory defaults
* Click OK to the message, Your firmware was updated successfully
* Close all boxes and restart the XPS 730

Any difference?

Is the rear CPU fan suppose to always be at 100% when in auto mode with no load on the CPU?

The rear CPU fan doesn't bother me that much, and it is no where as loud as when I had the thermal sensor problem and the front fans were at 55%. I just wanted to know if 100% on the rear CPU fan was normal.

lugo02,

Chris you changed your entire messages... I was referring to the fan on the CPU heatsink in the rear of the PC.
* Ok. That fan is constant, but not loud.

When I install the Nvidia software and go to Performance I get a blue screen and it just reboots.  Tried twice.  Any other way to update the firmware?

MikeYbarra,

Yes. There is a jumper on the Master Control board

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

 that resets it to default. It is #9 in the picture. The jumper is on two pins, put it on the other two, power the PC on, then off. Put the jumper back on the original pins. Power the PC on.

Turn on the "stop on error" setting in the bios and to see if you have the thermal sensor problem that I had. You can also run the Dell graphicl diagnostics, it you deleted that partition on the drive you can run it from a CD.

The rear CPU Fan setting under the Chassis tab has no effect on the CPU fan speed. To adjust the CPU fan, click on the CPU tab and use the cooling slider. Mine came set at 13%. It's pretty quiet at that setting, and my CPU runs around 35 to 38 degrees Celsius which is fine.

Ok I did that - moved the jumper from on the middle and right pins to on the middle and left pins.  Booted it up.  Then took it back down and put the jumper back.  I still get the loud fan on any CPU use.

Other ideas?

The second I try to get to the "Performance" section it blue screens and reboots.  I called Dell and they are sending a tech out to replace my power supply and motherboard.  I don't think it will solve anything.  The person I talked to had no clue - really at all.  He basically said 'turn it on, if it's loud I will send someone'.  So they're sending someone.  And he'll replace stuff and who knows maybe it will fix it.

No idea why Performance blue screens.  I am running 64-bit Vista with SLI 280's.  But I even turned SLI off and it still bluescreened.

We will see.

MikeYbarra,

So when you open up NVIDIA Performance, click Device Settings and under CPU Cooling, what percentage is yous on? Mine is on 26% and I barely hear it.
