Dell XPS One 2710 HDMI Input
Is it possible to use the HDMI input on this computer without having the computer running? I'd like to use my XPS screen as a monitor when working from home with my work laptop but I'd like to save energy and reduce noise by having the PC off or asleep.
Thanks

Good Morning
Thank you for contacting the community.
This is a good question, and something that has not been asked before as far as I can remember. But I am sure that if you press the source button on the screen, it will give you an option of HDMI or computer.
Let us know how you get on, and we will also try and gather more information on this.
Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the response but I'm afraid it does not help. I can switch between PC and HDMI no problem with the source buttons, but cannot use the source buttons without switching the screen on and I can't figure out how to have the screen on without having the PC on.
Seems like a big oversight! A four year old Sony All In One that belonged to a friend made it easy to switch the screen on without the PC.

I have a related querry -> given that the PC has to run in order to use the HDMI input (I use it with Satbox to watch TV), I could at least use the PC in between watching TV programs if I could switch back and forth from keyboard which would be so much more convenient than using the touch controls. Is that at all possible?
The keyboard switching control could be also handy if the touch control should sometimes stop working, or this particular control would stop working. Before upgrading to 8.1 it happened to me that after a windows update my touch controls stopped working completely but keyboard and mouse worked as usual which meant I could still use XPS PC as normal classic non-touch computer (if need be) but I could never switch to HDMI input to watch TV. I recovered the touch control by rollng win8 back to the point before the update and funny thing was, that update installed later on also (I left autoupdate on) and the touch controls worked, go figure. But at the time, that update was definitely the culprit
I have also found that if I don't log onto PC to Metro and switch to HDMI input directly from that 'wallpaper' that you need to slide up to enter login pass (on win8.1), that the computer shuts down automatically after like half an hour, or an hour (I didn't time it). It shuts down without warning, like if there was some built in timer. I have been wondering if there exists some setting for this that would allow the HDMI input to continue to be active indefinitely even without loging into the PC side of XPS machine..
