Either the Pentium D 950, or the D 945 should work in the Dimension 9100.
Prior to upgrading the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to to the latest version, A03, when support for newer processors was added.
The Dimension 9100 does not support any Intel Core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad processors.
The Core 2 Duo CPU, require a different motherboard, that's the reason for the 9200 system.

Late comment - just in case...
Q: What's the difference between the Pentium D 945 and 950?
A: 945 is 95 watts and 950 is 130 watts. Also, the 950 has Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x)
Q: Will a Dell Dimension 9200 Motherboard fit in a 9100 Case?
A: No, because the rear I/O panel is different (Ethernet port, USB ports, etc). They won't line-up with the 9200 motherboard's ports.
