Dimension 2400 2 Gb memory upgrade problem

I have read through a hundred Dimension 2400 memory upgrade postings, but none seem to address the problem I am experiencing. If I install both 1 Gb modules and press the start button, the computer starts for about 1 second, then shuts down for about 2 seconds, and then starts up again on its own, but the BIOS screen never appears and Windows never starts.  If i replace the 1 Gb module in Slot 1 with the 512 Mb module and leave the other 1 Gb module in Slot 2, it starts and works fine with 1.5 Gb of memory installed. However, if I install the 1 Gb module in Slot 1 and the 512 Mb in Slot 2 (total 1.5 Gb), the computer has the same problem (starts for about 1 second, shuts down for about 2 seconds, starts up again on its own, but the BIOS screen never appears and Windows never starts). So, the problem seems to be that only Slot 1 will not allow the use of a 1 Gb memory module.

Over 2 days, I have tested many configurations. I have successfully reset the NVRAM in each case using multiple methods, including removal of the backup battery, removal and installation of the CMOS jumper on the motherboard, and resetting to the Default config in the BIOS. The RAM memory installed is easily recognized in every case, except when a 1 Gb Module is installed in Slot 1. I have two 1 Gb modules, and both work with no problems when installed in Slot 2 with nothing in Slot 1 or with the 512 Mb module in Slot 1, but nothing works when a 1 Gb module is in Slot 1.

I bought my Dimension 2400 new in 2005, Celeron 2.4 Ghz, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Bios Rev A05, with 512 Mb (2 x 256) of RAM.  Upgraded to 1 Gb (2 x 512 Mb) a few years ago, and recently bought two 1 Gb modules to upgrade to a total of 2 Gb.  New modules are 1 Gb  PC2700  333 Mhz  DDR  Low Density.

Any ideas as to why a 1 Gb module in Slot 1 only would prevent operation of the computer?

The default is that I have to live with 1.5 Gb of RAM instead of a full 2 Gb.

Thanks

The only case I've encountered in which a Dimension 2400 would not accept 2 GB of memory involves the use of an add-on video card, and I'm not certain that the video card was the problem.  There is no difference between the two slots, so it should not matter which slot contains the 1 GB memory module.  Are you certain that the module is seated completely into the slot?

It's a fair question, and the answer is that I have installed and removed the RAM modules probably 40 times or so. The seating process is very consistent and the clamps on the end work very well. I have not experienced a problem with installing any of the 512 Mb modules in Slot 1 or Slot 2, and no problems with the 1 Gb modules in Slot 2. I only have a problem with 1 Gb modules in Slot 1.

Other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

You seem to have covered the procedures I would have tried, but just to be sure, did you try with only one memory slot populated, leaving the second slot empty?

Just to check; the memory slots are numbered with the first slot being the one nearest the processor socket.  Is that how you are reporting them?  Also, each time you have changed the memory configuration you have also reset the NVRAM by removing the back-up cell?  To be certain the NVRAM gets reset you also need to push the On button, holding it in the On position for about fifteen seconds to make sure all electricity has been discharged.

I was taught in school that computers are logical devices, but that has not been my experience.  I have run across several that behaved as illogically as any human.  Assuming you have no add-on video card to interfere with memory assignment, I don't know what to tell you.  As the last straw you can put the computer into a configuration that works and change the setting for Aperture memory to see if that will kick something into working.  The on-board video is AGP and uses some of the system memory for its buffering.  Exactly how much is not user changeable because it is partially dependent on how much memory is installed.  Only the aperture can be changed.  This probably won't help, but sometimes changing something jars something loose.

Reinstall the default RAM you removed and see if the Dimennsion 2400 boots without any issue.

The Dimension 2400 takes DDR PC2700 or PC3200 non-ECC with a maximum 1GB per slot. I do not believe it will run using PC2100. If you run with mixed speeds, it will run at the speed of the slower module.

Sounds like the new RAM is not compatible, the older Dell models can be 'picky' on which memory is installed.

Best to go to www.crucial.com and use their memory selector tools to find the compatible memory.

There are no 'switchs, or jumpers' to make non-compatible memory, compatible.

Yes, those models are pretty old. Not even sure if it's worth spending any money on it.

Good luck!
