Dimension 3000 Will Not Boot
It all started about a week ago, when I reinstalled Windows on my computer. I went to install the ethernet drivers (for the onboard Intel Pro/VE 100 NIC), and the computer just powered off. No warning, nothing. Just off. It was a completely reproducible problem. Tried installing Windows 7 on the same system, and after the first reboot during the install process, the same thing. The system just went dead. Again, completely reproducible. I took everything out of the case, cleaned it completely, reseated everything (including CPU, RAM and all add-in cards). Now the system simply will not boot. Plugged everything in, and pressed the power button. The fans spun up and ran for about half a second, all the lights flashed, and then nothing. No POST, not even a POST attempt. It will not power on. Any suggestions/ideas?

Best guess is a power supply problem. Disconnect the 24 pin power plug on the motherboard and then jumper Pin 14 (green wire) to one of the black (ground) wires and see if the power supply will come on and stay on. This is not a 100% test for the power supply but it will check to see if it will power on. If it powers off without the "load" (PC) it would be a safe bet the power supply is bad.

That did the trick. Tested the PSU with a paperclip, and it made the weird sound I've been hearing from my computer for a few months, and then quit. Put a new PSU in it, and it fired right up! Thanks!
