Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

I would like to upgrade the 128mb PCI Express ATI Radeon X300SE video adapter that came with this Dimension 4700.

I want to be able to connect two DVI monitors.

What video adapter would be best to use?

Thanks, Curly

6800 GS PCI-e with dual DVI-out.

6800 GS PCI-E with dual DVI-out?

Sounds good, except I can't find a video card like that...

There is a 6800 GS that fits the bill except that it is AGP 8X.

It doesn't seem like it is asking too much to connect two digital monitors (via DVI) with a video card that will work in the Dimension 4700. Or, is this computer just not capable of using any other cards?

I've seen references to the fact that one needs to upgrade the 4700's power supply in order to upgrade the video. Is that the problem here?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

Curly Joe,

I have a Dell 4700 and installed a 6800GS PCIexpress card and had no trouble. Not sure which model of 6800GS has the dual DVI since mine doesn't have that. New egg had a good selection the last time I checked. Good luck.

Re: Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

Chasin,

And there seems to be the rub? "mine doesn't have" dual DVI outputs...

I found one video card based on the 6800. It is made by Albatron. A main feature of this card is that it has "Wise Fan II" technology. Consequently, on the bottom of the card (facing away from the PCI slots) is a huge fan assembly. It looks to me like it wouldn't physically fit into the Dimension 4700 PCI-E slot. Not enough room between the fan and the motherboard connections.

I am wondering if it is impossible to hook up dual DVI monitors to a 4700...

Maybe if I upgraded the 4700's power supply I could use some other video card?

Sigh...

You could always go for the BFG 6600 GT OC dual-DVI.

Re: Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

Curly Joe,

I wish I could be of more help to you. I installed a EVGA brand card which for me does all I want it to do. My stock power supply was also a issue for me that I worried wouldn't be big enough, but so far that's not been an issue at all. As for the card you described.. I'm clueless as to if that's a good choice or not. I would hate to take up two slots in the event I would ever want to add on another card in the future. Someone else might have other suggestions.

Re: Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

McCarthy,

Thanks a lot for the help...

I found some info on the BFG card. It has dual DVI outs, but it is "suggested" that it be used with a minimum of a 350-watt power supply. Doesn't the Dimension 4700 have a 305-watt supply?

Also, the warranty on the BFG 6800 GT leaves something to be desired... It "only" comes with a lifetime warranty. 🙂 Can't fault that?

Does anyone have this card running in a Dimension 4700? Any reports?

Thanks again, Curly

Re: Dimension 4700 Upgrade to Dual-DVI?

Both the BFG 6600 GT and the BFG 6800 GT will run on the Dell 305W PSU without problem.  Search the forums for info on Dell PSUs and manufacturers' supposed ratings for PSU requirements.
