Dimension 5150 and XPS 400 Processor Upgrades

Will the Dimension 5150 and the XPS 400 accept a dual core processors with a 1066 Mhz FSB?  I am planning to update processors in both of my machines.  The Dimension 5150 has the 945G chipset and XPS 400 has the 945P chipset.  Both machines have A07 bios.  I would prefer to upgrade each to a Core2 Duo but rumor has it that they will only accommodate chips with a max FSB of 800 Mhz.  But according to Intel, each chipset will work with 1066 FSB processors.  Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Neither the 5150, or the XPS 400 support any Core 2 Duo processors.

The Core 2 Duo requires a different voltage regulator design than what's on the XPS400 and 5150 motherboards.

The 5150/e510 support Intel LGA775 Pentium D and Pentium 4 5xx and 6xx [Prescott] processors with Hyper-Threading technology.

For more e510 processor information, read the post HERE by Fireberd.

The fastest processor supported for the XPS400/9150 is the Pentium D 960.

Before installing the D945 processor in the 5150, check that you have a 0HJ054 motherboard installed [first paragraph of Fireberd's post].

Prior to installing the processor in the 5150, check that you have the latest BIOS version installed, because with BIOS version A05, support for newer processors was added.

Again, before installing the processor in the XPS,  check that you have the latest BIOS version installed, because with BIOS version A04, support for newer processors was added.

Both the XPS400 and 5150 systems do not use Dell proprietary power supplies, you can use most standard ATX power supplies with either, a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector and with a minimum of 2-SATA power connectors.

As they have open back panels, a power supply with or without the on/off switch can be used.

You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from most local, or online computer stores.

Bev,

Thanks for the response.  I will plan to use a 945 D in the 5150 and a 960 D in the XPS 400.  Although I plan to upgrade power supplies in both, it appears the fan and heatsink combo in the 5150 does not have the same capacity as the one in the XPS400 and 945D will only draw 11 watts more than the 630 P4 that is in there now.  Can you tell me what is fastest memory that is addressable by each machine?  I am not seriously planning to change the memory but just curious.  The machines have been flawless for 5 years and are quite fast for my applications.  And I really do like the case design.  I have also heard that standard sized ATX supplies can be installed in the Dell cases. But there appears to be a cutout in the Dell supply that mates with the fastening bracket inside so I am not sure if I will have any difficulties.  Thanks again for your help.

Bev,

It looks like the 5150 has the OKF623 motherboard, so maybe I will not be able to make the upgrade.  I do have latest BIOS on both computers:  A07.  Good news about power supplies, though.

That's a bummer, but it's a good thing you found out before buying the processor.   :emotion-5:

Thanks again, Bev.  The 5150 will stay the same.  But I will go with the Pentium 960 D on the XPS 400 as I understand it is ready as-is.

You need faster ram for the faster cpu   3 4 is a ram speed issue.

Hello Bev,

I have the xps 400 Pentium D with the Dell OYC523 motherboard and the Chipset i945P. I had attempted to use a Pentium D960 after reading your posts, but I got the 3 4 lights. The original cpu is the 820 2.8 ghz

So My question is what can I use to upgrade this CPU? I was told an D840, and I was told a D945 will work by two sources. You seem to really know your stuff. Can I please ask for your help in deciding which should work with this computer?

 Thanks in advance.

Bev,

Yes, I have A07 Bios. I am also using 4GB of ram memory from crucial, plus using a 16gb flash drive formatted NTFS  as the dedicated memory boost through usb.

Graphics card is XFX 7750 Power is 470W from Pc power and cooling

I have Windows 7 Pro installed X64 which runs just fine. So....3 4 is a RAM issue? how would I resolve that?

I guess I am just trying to get all I can out of this machine.
