Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

I've been checking the support download page for the C521 ever since I purchased my system in hopes a BIOS update would be released to fix my "slow audio" in Windows.

About a week or so ago Dell posted 1.1.1 Update BIOS...and then immediately pulled it because it caused the system to intermittently hang at the Dell Startup screen. They quickly and efficiently released BIOS version 1.1.2 to correct that problem. I never even saw or downloaded 1.1.1 so I wasn't worried about trying out 1.1.2.

Well unfortunately it looks likes BIOS 1.1.2 has the same issue. After I updated to it (following the instructions to the letter), my system would intermittently hang at the Dell Startup Screen. Smiley Sad

I have since downgraded to the last working BIOS, 1.0.3. My system now boots correctly with no hanging.

I emailed Tech Support to let them know the problem with 1.1.1 remains in 1.1.2, but the response I got made it sound like they could care less:

"Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us. Your comments and suggestions are very important and will us assist in making improvements.

If you need additional assistance with this issue and you utilize our phone or chat support channels, please provide them with this case number. SO, since they are going to file it in the "suggestion box," I thought that I would assist customers in my own way by letting them know to AVOID 1.1.2.

Re: Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

It sounds like you got the standard autoreply email.  I doubt anyone actually read or will read it though.  Maybe you should try Dell online chat since you actually get to talk to a real person.  The last time I had a problem with my laptop I used the online chat and it was so much better than calling them.  BTW what do you mean by "slow audio"?  Do you mean the quality of the sound is bad or the sound is delayed?  If your audio is messed up as in it has a delay or something like that I would contact tech support and have them fix it.  If it's just poor quality maybe adding a sound card would fix the problem.

Re: Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

I would also like to add that the C521 BIOS version 1.1.2 has hang up problems for me. I think it's a very common problem. I ordered a brand new C521 with the bios already updated. After one day, the computer would get hung up on the Dell bootup screen. Apparently, it does a hardware check and then it gets hung up.

1.1.2 was suppose to fix this problem, Dell better get on it and actually fix this BIOS problem. I spend top dollar on my computers, and I buy quite a few a year, and I must say I am not too happy with this experience.

Re: Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

my hang issues came from both BIOS's..... I think it has less to do with Dell and more to do with QC between Dell and nVidia, who manufactured the chipset for this system. In the end, I believe it has something to do with the way the computer's USB controller works that causes the hangs. Linux users are having a whole world of hurt with this system too. I wouldn't be surprised that your system hangs are related to USB...

As for slow audio, I have yet to see that problem on my system. I kind of wish Dell put some info on the revision history for 1.1.2....

What I have listed below is the only thing I have available for the 1.1.2's revision history.  Unfortunately the 1.1.1 version was short lived so I wasn't able to grab the information on what that version contained.  Since most Dell BIOSes are cumulative, the changes in 1.1.1 may have been incorporated in the 1.1.2 release.  It's difficult to to say since 1.1.1 was pulled and the release of 1.1.2 happened shortly thereafter.

System:        Dimension C521
Version:       1.1.2
Release Date:  12/6/2006

The following changes were made to BIOS revision 1.1.1 to create 1.1.2:

1. Fixed potential intermittent hang during power on.

Re: Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

The bios problem is the result of some usb issues. A dell tech representative recommended that in the bios setting USB controller, be turned off on boot up.

What I did that seemed to work was shuffle around the usb connections. For some reason the usb wireless can't be on the top usb connections.

I tried the new BIOS and a few other USB shuffling.... results are the same. comments available here: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_other&message.id=299366

Re: Dimension C521 BIOS 1.1.2 - Avoid

Much thanks for the info! Currently, our system is working fine with that self-powered hub so I'm kind of reluctant to flash it.... but I might do it later on just to see if anything good (or bad) happens. The wires now are tied down pretty tight too so I might not even know if it works or not - not in the mood to rewire all the USB devices.
