Dimensions e510 upgrading to windows 7 64 bit

I have installed 8GB of memory. BIOS sees 8GB; however the system will not boot up. Take out memory from slots 3 & 4...windows 7 boots up.

What is the story about this machine...is it not a 64 bit machine...why can it not accept more than 4GB of memory?

This is a stock e510; have not made any other changes or upgrades.

Thanks for any info regarding this machine.

First try these unofficial Drivers with Windows 7 64 bit including the latest BIOS and your 4 GB of RAM:

 http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/4640.dimension-5150e510-windows-7-64-bit.aspx

Then try putting your other 2 memory modules back in:

http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Standard-DRAM-Memory/Crucial-8gb-not-working-on-Dell-e510/td-p/6804

One other solution when booting up go to your BIOS settings and make sure your memory is set to ganged, this has resolved the issue for some others however the person with the solution didn't state what model of system they had and might not apply to this model:

Are all 4 memory modules matched?

I don't know why, but Dells from that era seem to have issues with 4x2gb memory arrangements.

It's definitely a 64-bit machine, as I installed Windows 7 x64 on one a few months back, with great success.

The 5150/E510 does not support more than 4 gigs.  This is a chipset limitation. Its 4 gigs with 3.25 useable.  The 0HJ054 motherboard Supports Pentium D 900 Series.  If you want more ram find a used Precision 380 which can take the full 8 gigs of ram.

Max ram is 3.25 gigs when you put 4  sticks of 1 Gig in.

With Pentium D 900 series and Bios A07 it even runs windows 8.1 64 bit but the memory limit is the same.  It also with bios A07 says unsupported CPU press F1.  Once you press F1 it boots and runs fine.  Pentium D cpus require the performance copper heatsink.

Yes, it is an old topic, but it did just help me. I put 6 gb of memory into my Dell E510 to do a fresh install of 7 Pro and it boots up to install but gets stuck on the Windows screen to start the install, Tried Windows 8 and Windows 10 too, This pc refused to install windows, The PC is o.k. because I could install Ubuntu on it and I have a second HDD with XP and it even booted into XP. I took out 2 gb of memory for a total of 4 gb in this pc and now Windows 7 is installing! Thanks for keeping this thread alive :)
