Does anyone one know what wattage power supply is on the XPS 8300

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 8300 and want to purchase a dual video card to support two monitors.  I have read a few different articles that a power supply of 500 watts is required.  I looked over the packing slip when I purchased the 8300 but it doesn't show the wattage.  Other than opening the case, is there any way I can find out the power supply that is installed?

Thanks!!!

I believe it is the same as the 8500 which is 460W, and has two six pin PCIe power connectors.

Which exact card are you planning?

also, if you haven't opened the case in a while, you might do that (outside) with a can of compressed air and clean out the dust bunnies.

My suggestion is to start a new thread titled graphics card upgrade for an XPS 8300 -- and search the forum.

I would list the monitors you plan to use, brand, model number, part number and what you are intending to do.

The card that Dell sent you a link to is an NVIDIA Quadro K620, and unless you need the double precision memory to do CAD, I would consider an NVIDIA GTX card over the Quadro.

A GTX 750ti is about $100 and will out perform the Quadro K620 and will work with the stock PSU.

A  GTX 950 GAMING 2G is about $145 after rebate right now, will also work with the stock PSU and is much, much faster than the K620

The label on the power supply will have a statement on it indicating its power output.

Hi, The card Dell sent me in a link is the, NVIDIA Quadro K620 - Graphics card - Quadro K620 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCIe 2.0 x16 low profile - DVI, DisplayPort

I used to know this really well several years ago but everything has changed.  I think the 460w PS, which I checked when I opened up the case is what is installed, may not be adequate this this card.  I am not sure yet as I don't know how many plugs are on the 460w as opposed to the 500w ps's.
