Macroshortcut:

This is a technical forum for helping other members. If you have a specific hardware issue, please provide some details and maybe other members can help.

It's not a "rant" forum. Sorry.

I wanna jump in on this, I have had a couple of problems with Dell over the years, but between this forum and tech support, problems have ALWAYS been resolved.

It's kinda funny: Posting "Do not buy a Dell" on a Dell forum.

Usually members of the Dell forum bought their Dells before coming here, so, it's too late.

In Fact, I Got my first Dell Mar.29, 2002, and thanks to a link in the AOL screen, I found Dell support, and joined in June. Of course, I don't have AOL anymore, and am dropping Earthlink as my IP, because I got Verizon DSL.

In my experience, 99% of the complains like that are completely user error. Granted, sometimes people will get defective units, but more often then not people simply aren't using them correctly.

I get at least 2-3 people a day that come up and complain about how much they hate their dell and most of the time if they're willing to tell me the problem it turns out they were doing something wrong and are able to fix.

Without bothering to say what type and model I can neither agree nor disagree.

However SFF means to me SMALL FAILS FAST.

I have never had good luck with low profile systems. They overheat and in general are a problem for me.

A couple weeks ago, my son was talking to a friend about Dells. His friend had an 8400 and complained it was the worst computer they'd ever owned. After asking why, he told my son their system was very slow, IE wouldn't open or run properly, etc. My son graciously offered to take a look. It took him three hours to remove literally hundreds of viruses, trojans, spyware programs, etc., then he installed AVG, Zone Alarm and the usual spyware programs.

Now suddenly they love their Dell.

I get lots of calls from people who complain of slowness.  Invariably, they either don't have antivirus or firewall software.  One dude had 1800 processes running!  A quick glance at his temp internet files showed that he was apparently browsing every porn site ever created.  Great places to pick up drive-by trojans and viruses.   I agree, users are usually the primary cause of system instability.

I have had awsome luck with my Dell pc's.  And if there has been a problem it has been resolved with Dell on-line chat or the forum's.  You cant get customer support like Dell has.  Not for free anyways.  Keep up the good work Dell!!:smileyhappy:

I bought the Dimension XPS T-500 several years ago and it has been one great computer!  I have upgraded the CPU to 800 MHz (Maximum according to Dell but found out from Dell Forum too late 1GHz is maximum), upgraded the RAM to 512, Dual-booted 98se & XP Home.....yada, yada, yada.  Never a problem, unless I cause it.

I just bought the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and it's doing a great job.  I also have a Dimension 8200 which was given to me.  Now this is a different animal that should never have been put on the market.

There is one major thing to realize when you buy Dell.  Everything in it (except the drives) is proprietary!  This can create a MAJOR headache for end users unless you stick to buying the very expensive Dell parts.

I have enjoyed the benefits of Dell Forum since I bought the T-500 and find it to be a better source of information and help than Dell tech service, which needs to be put out of it's misery.

Keep up the work Dell Forum.  You guys are the best!!

The "proprietary" thing is a little overblown. Dell use standard drives, RAM, CPUs, PSU (lately), etc. Expansion slots are industry standard. Generally the case and motherboard configuration is standard but the I/O board and pinouts are not. So other than the motherboard and maybe the floppy drive, everything else can be replaced with standard off-the-shelf parts.

Of course, aibling328, if you'd rather buy from Dell, I'm sure they appreciate it.

my experience with dell has been great. I am 14 and i was with my dad when he ordered my 2400 on the phone. The salesman seemed likede he knew wat he was doing and of course offering upgrades here and there and my dad took some of those. WHen i opened it on xmas it was fast. Then a month later when i reformatted, it ran 10x faster like it is now. Of course, my pc is heavily protected. Here are my specs

Also Macro, its the pc user 9/10x that screws up the computer you do the math.

DELL DIMENSION 2400

INTEL CELERON 2.60GHZ

MAXTOR 80GB HD

my first time with Dell and its my last time...I had tech support lie to me...I had the sales rep lie to me.......from what I have read on this board dell is going down hill with customer care and support...and their xps systems seem to have alot of problems anf support dont have a clue...most users get the help here and some wind up modifying their system with parts they buy on thr net to remedy problems....no....no more dells for me......
