Dual Monitors won't display when both connected

Jump to solution

Everything did work before installing video driver from AutoCad website.  Now when I start sys with both mons connected the msg "Unable to display - Optimal resolution 1280 X 1024" - I unplug one monitor and the other monitor then displays the Win 7 login screen and I can use system.

Dell T5600 Workstation, Nvidia Quadro 4000 video card, 2 1280 X 1024 Dell monitors (1908 & 1907 Models).

After installing the driver the control panel had an option "mosaic" which I thought was for extending the desktop to both monitors (spanning them) and I thought I would try it - Big mistake - Can't recall exactly what occurred  next but upon rebooting got the msg above.  I unplugged one of the monitors to connect another in the hopes of resolving issue and that is when I discovered the other monitor would display video if they both were not connected. ???

Since then I have tried to rollback the driver, installed a video driver from the Dell site and am still in process of downloading drivers from Dell hoping that I will get lucky.  I am still at the point where both monitors connected cause the msg but only one monitor and everything is fine ????

Any help much appreciated!

Always include the version of Windows in your posts. emoticon.Wink.title

You could try a System Restore to latest date available before you installed that AutoCad driver. Personal files shouldn't be affected but always good to back up first. How to access System Restore depends on which version of Windows you're using...

After System Restore, you will have to reinstall all Windows updates or other updates that were originally installed after the date used for the System Restore. But -obviously- don't reinstall the AutoCad driver.

Hi Ron, thanks for the response and suggestion.  I was able to get my dual monitor setup to work again.  I did specify Win 7 in first paragraph, btw 😉  Perhaps this will help someone?:

After connecting both monitors and rebooting (I had installed a video driver from Dell website) I still got msg: 1: Auto Detect (Digital Input) - Cannot display this video mode - Optimal Resolution 1280 X 1024 60 Hz.  This is displayed on both monitors.

I pressed 'P" twice while holding the Windows key down and both monitors lit up.  I then reviewed the settings in the nvidia control panel, but did not change anything.  Especially the Mosaic option!  I rebooted and was presented with the Win 7 log in screen on one monitor and after logging in both monitors came on and that is where I am.

Am going to lunch and on returning will reboot again and if all goes well will return here and mark this as answered.  One thing I'll mention the card has two digital ports, I believe they are called, and one DVI port.  One mon is plugged into DVI and the other via adapter into one of the two digital ports.

Thanks again,

Norman

so far so good 😉

Upon returning I rebooted PC and it came up as it normally did.  Phew!

Thanks again Ron, luckily I did not have to do system restore.

Happy Holidays!
