E520 with Q6600 and 8Gb Ram?

My E520 came with an E4300 Core 2, I want to go to a Q6600. Also, Dell says that the max memory is 4Gb, but Intel says the chipset addresses 8Gb.

If this does 8Gb (has anyone installed one like this? Or tried?) I will replace my XPS400 server with another E520.

Please tell me:

? Q6600 - Yes or No
? 8Gb (4x 2Gb DDR2 667) - Yes or No

"Dell says that the max memory is 4Gb"

The bios will not recognize 8gb.

I found this out when I bought my 9200. Dell would never give you a MB that would support a quad core without having you dish out more dough for a XPS 7xx first.

None of the 9200 or 52x line will support a quad. Only the XPS 7xx line would, they made sure of it.

I have confirmed with Dell that a Q6600 would work on the XPS410. We should be careful about the information that we disseminate.

Can someone from Dell proper please confirm?

Already confirmed with Dell that a Q6600 will work in the XPS410, Why do you need further Dell confirmation?

That makes no sense!

By the way....

Greater than 4Gig memory becomes no more a hardware issue, also a software recognition issue.

Ouch - OK stop beating me up.

The second confirmation helps because my confirmation was with Dell chat - a pre-sales person.

Quit with the 8Gb vs 4Gb, I am running a 64 bit OS.

< ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Do the simple search with the manual on that E520 and you will clearly see that the system only takes a max of 4 gigs of memory

Carlos De Matos : What does running a 64bit OS have to do with it? 4GB is the limit at this time. The 8GB your talking about is what the motherboard can support. That doesn't mean it's available as an option at this time.

Carlos De Matos,
Do you want an E520 or is it a XPS410?

The answer is still the same either way.

WRONG ANSWER!

Yes E520 will gladly support Q6600 and 8Gb of Ram.

Did you end up getting 800MHz or 667MHz RAM?  I've been told that 667MHz will do, but I don't understand why I wouldn't get 800MHz when the motherboard in the E520 supports up o 800MHz.  Also, I just wanted to confirm that you were able to succesfully boot with 4x2GB sticks of RAM and a Q6600...I'm looking to get this and don't want to buy the parts if it isn't going to work.

Thanks

Will the E520 support 8GB RAM with the Intel Pentium D CPU (3.4GHz) ?

I am not sure from the last message if the Q6600 is also needed?

I was hoping to stick 4 * 2GB Kingstons in...

I put 4 X 2 GB DIMMs into the E520. They are 6400, 800MHz and work fine.

So the answer is YES the E520 can take twice the user manual specs, with a Pentium D CPU (@3.4GHz).

Windows 7 64-bit RC (7100) sees the 8GB and uses it and works great. XP (32-bit) still only sees 3GB.

No real thanks to the community here. :emotion-42:

Just wanted to add I have an E520 running a Q6600 CPU and 8 Gb RAM.  It works great - Windows 7 RTM perfromance looks like this:

Similar results to mine, but your RAM scores much higher.  I'm at 4gb of PC2-5300 but thinking to go up to 8gb of KTD-DM8400C/2G (800mhz).

 Which RAM did you install?
