Failed Windows 10 Update (Inspiron 3847)

For a while now my computer has been prompting me to upgrade to Windows 10. Last night it started the update. I walked away to do other things and when I returned to my computer it was on a Dell Recovery screen. It did a hardware check and said it didn't find anything wrong and the only other option its giving me is to reinstall the OS.

I am very worried that if I do that I am going to loose all my data. Is there a way to fix this by any means? If I take a USB stick with Windows 10 on it could it repair the OS? Any information would be helpful.

Do you have any recovery disks you can boot to? Have your checked if your model is approved by dell for upgrading to 10? Approved models will have the right drivers for 10Check here--

If it is not approved, use your recovery disks to return to your previous operating system. If you need to Create Media for Windows 8.1 go here and follow the directions carefully.

Stay with the computer when updating the operating system to check for error messages.

It was on the list as approved, and it was up to date before the upgrade started. Sadly I did not have any recovery disks. Thank you for the link, I will give that a try and see what happens. I am going to hook my HD up to another computer and back up all my files before I try any OS restore as I fear data loss. I just wish I knew if it was going to just touch the OS or if it will erase my disk during repair/reinstall
