GX 740 upgrade to PHENOM 9600b

I would like to know if the first generation AMD PHENOM processors will work in the am2 socket of the optiplex GX 740?

Will second gen phenom processors work as well?

Also I have been told that the PCIe x16 slot will accept PCIe 2.0 and will be able to operate them without problems is this true?

Thank you guys.

SORRY IF these are dumb questions.

TTF,

Dell only validated the following OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Phenoms. None of the retail ones -
X203G AMD Phenom 8600B 2.30GHz 512x3, X039G AMD Phenom 9600B 2.30GHz 512x4

From the Manual -
NOTE: The AMD Phenom processor requires the 8mb NVRAM chip and is therefore available only on models that include the 8mb NVRAM chip. If your computer has the 8mb NVRAM chip and the AMD Phenom processor, the word enhanced appears in the title on the BIOS splash screen and the system setup program screens.

Optiplex 740
* Three chassis - SFF (Small Form Factor), DT Desktop, MT Mini-Tower
* Motherboards - T570C SFF, T569C DT, T426C MT
* CPUs - X203G AMD Phenom 8600B, X039G AMD Phenom 9600B
* Power Supplies - 275w SFF, 280w DT, 305w MT

These are the Phenoms we validated -
X037G AMD 9550  2.2Ghz
X039G AMD 9600B 2.3Ghz
X203G AMD 8600B 2.3Ghz
X206G AMD 8750  2.4Ghz

I do not see 2nd generation in the parts list.

The PCI-E x16 is designed to provide 8 GB/sec. of bandwidth which is 2.0.

Thank you so much for that info.

would I have to do a bios update inorder to use those chips?

or is it just a direct plug and play?

* Yes.

* I only see 65w and 89w in our parts list?

have others been tried and failed?
* No idea.

or is it that they just haven't tried?
* We never tested CPUs not in our parts list.

The latest Optiplex 740 BIOS version 2.2.5 can be downloaded from HERE

A Hint: Read the installation instructions carefully before updating the BIOS.

As you intend to reuse the heatsink, plan on cleaning it's base and reapplying thermal compound to the processor.

Directions for cleaning and applying thermal compound, are HERE.

You only need a small tube of thermal compound, this can be purchased from any online, or local computer store.

The Optiplex 740 User's Guide, with the procedures for removing and installing the processor is HERE

Thank you for all the help.

Will the stock heat skink work well with the phenom?

I know they produce more heat.

Which Optiplex 740 model version do you have?

The Mini Tower, Desktop, or the Small Form Factor.

I'll assume it's the Mini tower version.

Yes, it should be fine.

Note: The Optiplex 740 heatsink is a Dell proprietary part and there is no retail equivalent available.

yes the bios version reads 2.2.5

I read in other threads where you wrote to remove the ram and other installed cards. then reinstall them. I did that, nothing changed

I also read where you said to pull the mobo power cord and then reinstall it. also did that nothing changed.

what should I do?

Just to add,

its not a blinking orange light its a solid orange.

March 31st, 2011 09:00

OK

I installed the phenom got a good secure thermal paste connection.

I plug the desktop into the wall and a all i get is a solid orange light where the green power light usually is.

WHAT IS GOING ON???
