Graphics Card Upgrade

Jump to solution

Hi, im currently looking to upgrade my computer's graphics card. I have a dell inspiron 3847, with a 300w power supply unit.

The current graphics card is the nvidia gt 705

Im looking to replace it with a "gtx 1050 2gb. This card requires a 300w psu.

Is this compatible with my pc?

GOTO Tom's Hardware site for comparison. IMHO, you should have MORE than 300W PS. There should be a safety margin of about 10%. All hardware draw from ONE PS, and if demand exceeds the rateing, it cold fail or shut down. Most likely, trip the breaker.

Two things to watch for:  your system likely doesn't have power connectors for a video card, so be sure the card you buy doesn't need them.s

The other thing is to make sure the card you want fits the system physically - there are differences in physical size depending on the card you choose.

Otherwise, that chip should work -- provided the card itself fits your chassis and draws power only from the mainboard.

Just checked it. Card draws power from the motherboard. Also fits in the case. Should be good to go then?

Cheers

Yes.  Be sure you remove the existing video drivers before shutting down to swap in the new card - once it's in, you can then install the drivers for it.
