HELP - clean install - drivers and utilities disk wont recognise my computer as dell !
Hi, been tortured by this problem for a few days now, we clean installed my dimension 1100 and after installing windows xp, we put in the drivers and utilities disk and it started/installed the wizard, then said ;we cannot recognise your machine as a dell computer' and exited.
we have tried intalling drivers etc from the dell site but still the sound wont work after many hours trying. if the cd would work then hopefully we could get it up and running
can anyone help????
thanks
a.

Not sure why it does not recognize the PC as a Dell.
However, on a manual install you can download whatever you need from the Dell downloads and it should work OK.
If the sound driver will not install, that is usually because the motherboard chipset drivers were skipped. The chipset drivers must be installed before the sound drivers or they will not install.
The correct and required install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) on applicable models install the Dell Desktop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, sound, ethernet, etc.
If the Intel motherboard chipset drivers were skipped, usually you can install them, restart the PC and then install the Dell sound drivers. In a few isolated cases of install problems it will take a new/correct sequence install.

I wonder if the audio got disabled in the BIOS? When you boot up press F2 to enter the Setup and check to see if the integrated audio (my be labeled Legacy Audio) is enabled and if not, enable it.
You can also try uninstalling the sound in the Device Manager (Right click on the device to highlight it and then Left Click on Uninstall). Then restart the PC and Windows should detect and install it.
