Half-screen black window

I've seen some old posts on other forums where people were having an issue with half their monitor going black on startup after a recent update. We just had and update in the last week and now our Win8.1 PC is doing something similar.

We've only seen it a couple times now. It's not a completely featureless half-screen.  It is black but it's more like a window.  There is a frame that I can drag to the edge of the screen and it will go away.  I only have to drag it about halfway, then release and it will snap over and close.

I can post more detailed info if needed but the basic is that my system is a Dell XPS 8700, 64-bit with an "Intel Core i7-4700 CPU @ 3.60Hz 3.60 GHz" and 16.0 GB of RAM.

Any insight, guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
