Hating Windows 8

Is it possible to wipe my PC of Windows 8, purchase Windows 7, and have the PC work?

I despise Win8.  I was happy with good old XP.  Then we upgraded to Win7 at work.  Now I've accidentally purchased a Dell PC for home that came with this horrible, horrible Win 8 loaded.

I will not use this thing.  It is less than a year old, and I hate it.

If I can't go back to Win 7, which is what I intended to order when I bought this PC, am I just stuck with an expensive paperweight?

I will go back to my old, old Dell tower and XP rather than suffer with Win 8.

Any hope for me out there?

Upgrade to 8.1 and configure it to boot to desktop.  You probably won't hate it so much.  Good Luck.

Yes; you can download a retail install ISO from Digital River and install it. Afterwards, you have 30 days to activate it, and I suggest buying a copy from Newegg, which regularly puts Windows 7 on sale. Subscribe to their newsletter to get the sale codes.

Win 8 Sad

Please post the computer model.

Note: Microsoft is ending all support for XP in April 2014.

Win 8 Sad

I've found using StarDock's Start 8, that gives a Windows 7-styled start menu, makes both Windows 8 and 8.1 more palatable to use.

If you don't like Start8 which you can try, free for 30 days, you can try Classic Shell which is totally free.

Either one of those will make you (almost) forget you have Win 8 or 8.1.

Ensure that you have upgraded to Windows 8.1 as it has some improvements over Windows 8.0. If you have no Start Button you have Windows 8.0, if you have a Start Button, you have Windows 8.1.

Follow the instructions here to customise Windows 8.1 so it is more suitable to your use:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/customising-windows-8-1/

The two things people hate most about Windows 8.1 once customised as above are the Start screen (which can actually be a bit better if customised properly) and Apps (which are simply awful on a Desktop).

Start8 and ModernMix both by StarDock fix both of the Windows 8/8.1 problems:

Purchase of these 2 programs will make the Windows 8.1 user interface equivalent to Windows 7 and have the added performance boosts of Windows 8.1. You can also uninstall all Windows 8.0/8.1 Apps if you want.

It is also much cheaper than a Windows 7 license. After all why pay Microsoft twice for a failing product?
