I turn it on and the screen is black asking for a password. During start up I have options f2 and f12. Both options lead back to this same screen.  I've tried f11 repeatedly. Nothing ..

Yessi,

The Vostro 230 shipped with Windows Vista or Windows 7. You will need to get a Windows disk, format and reinstall Windows and Drivers. Your better off obtaining a Windows 7 disk.

Below are links to help you get your system installed with Windows and driver install information. If you need any further help you will need to contact Dell Support. at 1-800-624-9897. US

Vostro 230 or 230S ?

You may need to replace the motherboard battery, especially if this system has been sitting unplugged for a while. It's a CR2032 3-volt battery, ~$2 at discount stores. Instructions to replace the battery are in the manual. I'd do that before doing anything else, if nothing else than to rule the battery out.

Since it sounds like Windows never starts to load, there may be a system password set. To clear that, you'd have to move the password jumper on the motherboard. The location of the jumper is shown in the manual for the 230 (NOTE: 230S may be different), but the manual doesn't say which pins to move the jumper onto to clear the password. Maybe Jesse can help with that, and be sure to write down which pins the jumper is on now, before you do anything so you know where to put it back after clearing the password.

If this is beyond your abilities, maybe you have a geeky friend who can help...
